was it worth the trade up?

As an 05 RT owner, I constantly think about trading up to the SRT-8. Especially when I modify my car. Although it is loads of fun to do so, there is a point of diminishing returns. Thus, I think about just getting the SRT-8 if I can find one out here. The dealer doesn't have one, but tells me they probably can eventually get one.

But then as gas prices go through the roof (currently $3.60 for mid-level gas), I am happy I have MDS. I only get 12 mpg at best around town, but on the 2 lane highway to the other side of the island, I can get 22 mpg if I take it easy.

So, for those of you who made the move, was it worth the extra $10-15k or whatever, to get the SRT-8?

Of course, I would end up modifying it anyway. Thanks for your opinion.

I sold my 05 RT AWD and purchased an SRT8.
    Well worth the trade up.
Milage isn't an issue, I was getting 13-14 with the RT around town.
    I'm getting 14-16 with the SRT8.
World of difference in power and handling - a whole new driving experience.
Albeit the BRAKES create a LOT of dust. DM is working on this now.
Also, the later model SRT8s have the abiliy to turn of ESP - mine is only partial.
    Best time so far is 13.22 @ 108.82 as compared o 13.75 @ 103.4.
The 6.1 EXPLODES above 3500 RPM.
Manaflow CATBACk and K&N AirCharger - no other mods planned or needed.

At this point I have put the "brakes" on modifying my RT. My business is doing very well now and in addition to buying a new house next year, I'm also intending to buy an SRT (hopefully cash!!!).
(Waiting patiently for the 2011/12 300C SRT 8)

The thought that the smaller engine always gets the better gas mileage does not always ring true. The vehicle weight remains about the same from the small V6 up to the SRT8. If you drive that vehicle like a race car the smaller engine is really going to work hard to move all that metal. The larger engine can do it much easier. The large strain on a small engine can reduce gas mileage and longevity. That is why you don't see too many V6's in full size trucks.

Now if you spend all your time on the highway then the small engine will definately provide much better gas mileage. The around town situation is where that may break down some what.

I bought an SRT8 to begin with and it gets the same or better gas mileage than the '96 Formula Firebird it is replacing.

    BC,
Paid $3.06 on the way to Lake Havasu, AZ this weekend (in Calif.) and thought that was pretty good. Found the hi-octane for $2.96 in AZ. for the return trip.

    $2.63? Count your blessings!

PS: Got 19.7 MPG on the 300 mile drive home today in my 425-450HP SRT8 wagon.
