As far as I know, the system is designed to have enough coolant in it counting the volume of the heater core. Even though the heater is off, there is still fluid in it because there is no where to displace it in the system. When the heater is off, the vents on the core itself close so you feel no heat.

ok the reason Im asking is because I took my car in to get a sound system installed and the guy from the shop called me a couple days ago saying that my car was leaking trans fluid. I made a post about this and someone said that when they got their sound system installed that they tapped into their heater core. So my next question is if they did tap into it would the drop in coolant be significant enough to notice in the reservior bottle?

if the system is punctured the reservoir may not function anymore due to the seal being broken.

You'll know soon enough if they did...!

Any fogging of the windows? Is the reservoir low?

I would guess that the coolant would continue to leak out if you ran the engine.

Have you seen the fluid that leaked out? The coolant will be the texture of water and possibly with a blue tint. The transmission fluid will be the consistency of oil, somewhat slippery and probably a red brown color.

The audio guys should know the difference so if they said trans fluid I'd go with them. In that post you mentioned, someone made a comment about seals going/leaking. Have you investigated that?

Also, how much fluid was there omn the deck? Sounds like it should be trailered straight to your dealer whatever the problem.

    Good luck.

I went this morning to check it out and the coolant level in the reservoir is right at the "min" mark, is that normal? Im pretty sure its trans fluid though, they threw some sawdust on the fluid and it made the sawdust red. I just gotta wait for them to finish the system so i can get it trailered to the dealership which sucks because I wont be able to enjoy it!

The heater core has hot coolant in it at all times ( obviously only if the motor is hot) and a duct flap blocks off the air flow through it to not let the heat out
