    Powder Coating - temperature threshold?

Jimmy told me about a forum member who powder coated their CAI tube. Just curious as to the temperature threshold that powder coating can withstand. Would I be better off having it anodized? Looking to go red, for obvious reasons.

powdercoat is good for a few hundred degrees... more than your intake tube should see, that's for sure. For looks though, I personally think anodizing is the better choice. Really, you could do either one yourself... craftsman has a powdercoat system that's pretty cheap and anodizing really only requires a lotta electricity, a few chemicals and some dye... there are how-to's on the internet.

A true powdercoating is usually baked on the material you are trying to coat. That is why you can't powdercoat plastic. I would think it would be good for the CAI tube. I had some aluminum wheels powdercoated and never had any problems with the heat from the brakes/rotors, and they got fairly hot on occasion.. A lot of the strut tower braces you can buy for car to go under the hood are also powdercoated, and I have not seen any with coating problems.

Great example on the STB. I didn't even think of that. Probably subjected to the same operating temperatures at the CAI. Thanks for the insight.

Don't worry about it, at the rate of speed of the motor sucking in air at wide open throttle the air wouldn't have much time to raise in temp anyways.
