Mufflers vs. Resonators

Forgive my ignorance, but does anyone know what are the mufflers and what are the resonators on our vehicles? It seems that 50% of muffler shops say the rear are the mufflers and the other half say different. I'm trying to figure out which ones to replace to get a little louder sound with no cab drone. One guy wants to put flowmaster Delta 40's on the rear, the other wants to replace the suitcase mufflers with the flows. Any responses would be appreciated.

The mufflers are in the middle of the car and the resonators are on the back with the exhaust tips. My opinion lose the resonators

I lost the resonators and had new tips put on my R/T and loved it. I can't wait to do it to the SRT8!

I replaced the resonators with the Blastin Bob's pipes and its just what the car was missing. There is just a little bit of drone but on the highway i'm always up higher in the rpm range so it dosnt bother me. Tips look awsome too.
