    magnum srt-8 gas guzzler

This is kind of a difficult question to ask. I don't remember where i heard it or who told me, it might in fact have come FROM a thread here, i don't know, and i apologize if it did, but it is my understanding FROM this unknown source that the magnum has tinted windows in the back because it is classified as a truck? i just came up with this question now, i've never looked up what the classifications of a truck are, to see if that statement holds water. But if this is true, and the magnum should be classified as a truck, then does that mean that the magnum srt-8 will not have a gas guzzler tax since it is classified as a truck, and the 300C srt-8 is classified as a car or sedan? Again, i don't know if these questions have been answered in any other threads and i'm sorry if i'm repeating. Thanks for the help.

I don't think the tinted windows have anything to do with it, but I believe the Magnum is technically considered to be a truck. The gas guzzler tax does not apply to the Magnum RT, so I don't see why it would be any different for the SRT-8. Same car with some upgrades.

Both 5.7L Hemi LX's escape the gas guzzler tax because they have reasonable highway mileage ratings thanks to the MDS system - the 6.1L Hemis in the SRT's don't have MDS. It will be interesting to see if the Magnum SRT-8 is indeed exempt based on its truck classification...

The windows are legally allowed to be tinted darker because it is classified as a truck.

I previously thought that the gas guzzler tax was based on GVW, but I just read the FAQ on www.fueleconomy.gov and it just says that gas guzzler tax does not apply to trucks. On that same site, they list the Magnum as a light truck, so I would guess that the 300 SRT-8 will have the tax but the Magnum SRT-9 will not.

I thought the original reason for the truck classification was due to a loophole with the fold down seats. (Seemed funny to me, but I remember hearing it.)

The Magnum is classified as a truck by the EPA because it has a flat load-in floor. Same thing with the PT Cruiser.

I think that any manuifacture can tint all windows except drivers and passengers front as an option usually listed as privacy glass It would have little to do with being a truck or not. I after being hasseled for tinted front windows i finally heard a logical reason for no front tint to make eye contact with pedesterians. Before you hit them!!

Since the magnum is classified as a truck it can have dark tint on all windows except the windshield and front windows. If the magnum had a station wagon classification then all the windows would have the std. tint. As said, the truck classification is because the flat floor loading area.

If the Magnum SRT8 doesn't get hit with the gas-guzzler tax, for whatever reason, while both the 300c SRT8 and Charger SRT8 vehicles do include this additional $2k on their price tags.... won't that make the Magnum SRT8 even more appealing, since it will be the lowest cost/highest performance of the 3?

    Just a thought....

Magnum SRT8 more appealing indeed, my .o2.

I think also that not the classification, but the reason
for one being taxed, and the other not. Sounds to be a little bias.

THe tax should be applied do to MPGs, and not just
because a seat folds down or not.....................

    Sighned, happy RT owner :D

The gas mileage on the Magnum SRT-8 will be slightly less than the 300C SRT-8, due to the little extra weight and still not have the Federal GGT. It should be around $3k cheaper than the 300C SRT-8 in base price and then another $2,100 cheaper without the GGT. Plus factory painted Brembo calipers also. Sounds like a bargain!
