    Inquired about Magnum SRT-8 yesterday

I went to the local Dodge dealer to ask about the Magnum SRT-8 yesterday. The first thing the salesman said is that he doesn't think they're going to be available until next year. I figured that either he just didn't know or he wants to sell me something off the lot. So I probe him a bit more and it's a little of both. Apparently, they're not taking orders or even starting a waiting list and they're definitly going to be marking them up over MSRP. He told me they had a market adjustment on the Neon SRT-4 and Ram SRT-10 on the lot. The SRT-5 markup was $3995, I didn't look at the SRT-10's sticker. The salesman also said that the 7-yr/70k powertrain warranty doesn't apply to any SRT models and they are dropping it for all 2006 models, too. Bummer if that's true.

Anyway, I got my first up-close look at a Magnum and I took my first test-drive in a Magnum R/T. I was mostly impressed. Cornering, acceleration, and braking were better than I expected, but body roll was unacceptable (for me). The seats weren't very comfortable and didn't hold me in place very well while cornering, so the SRT-8 seats will be a very welcome improvement.

Of note, this new Magnum R/T I drove had different "R/T" and "HEMI" badges than any of the others on the lot, and it also had a prop-rod instead of gas-charged struts holding up the hood.

    Build Date for Magnum SRT8s

    Brian,
Go to this web site http://www.arifleet.com/production.html and you'll see that #1 build date for the SRT8 Magnum will be May 17 but they do not have a lead time posted yet however all of the other models are 8-10 weeks which should make delivery of the first produced cars around July 17 -31. The Charger SRT8 production will not begin until September 12th.

Jeez 4K markup on a SRT4....Silly because around here they can't get rid of them! Great car. My ass is too wide for the seats but I could cope Whats with the desire to gouge the hell out of the consumer these days. I understand its all capitalism but it's really beyond belief these days. $1.20 for a pack of gum, $1.29 for a 20oz of coke at a 'convenience' store and the same things go for half that or less at a supermarket. I gotta start gouging my customers I think

Ooooo, you drove an '06. Any other differences you noticed from the other RT's, wheels, int. trim, etc?

That's all I noticed. This was the first time I ever touched/sat-in any Magnum, '05 or '06. So, even if there are many more differences, I probably wouldn't notice. The badges just stuck out because I've seen them on other R/Ts and the prop rod just struck me as totally cheap and that's when I noticed the others had struts.

I forgot to mention, the salesman said no test drives of any SRT-8 vehicles. You sign the papers, and you get to drive it. He said they want to weed out the joy riders. I sort of understand it, and I don't mind going through some extra steps to prove I'm serious, but there's no way I'll actually sign a binding contract until I've driven it.

if they won't let you drive it first, have sales manager sign the contract right next to where you write " SUBJECT TO SATISFACTORY TEST DRIVE ".

When I asked my dealer about the SRT-8 Magnum, the salesman said, "Umm... we've got the SRT-4 Neon, if that's what you're talking about".
