It is like the late 60s all over again. HP is soaring and 1/4 mile times are dropping. Just when you thought it was safe to hit the streets with your 425HP 6.1 liter hemi along comes:
GM
The General has finally woken up. They have several big dogs on the drawing board:
Supercharged Z06 - not content with mid 11s in the 1/4 mile apparently, rumor has it that they are dropping a supercharger on the LS7 and that will push it over 600HP! The price is expected to around $100,000 if early reports are to be believed.
CTS-V - Caddy is going to take that same Vette motor and shoehorn it into the next generation V. Their stated goal is to smoke the V10 M5. Needless to say, any SRT8s without a blower won't stand a chance. It may be "detuned" down to 550HP for the sedan.
Camaro - top version allegedly will have the non-blown LS7 good for 500HP.
Grand Prix - GM is set to announce they will import the new Holden Commodore SS-V and revise it to make the next Grand Prix. Target sales are about 30,000 per year.
new OHC - Caddy is finally replacing the undersized Northstar with a new overhead cam engine. It is expected that it will be able to handle displacements up to 6.0 liters. It will be called the "Ultra" and it will have variable valve and lift timing.
Lexus
LF-A - it looks like a updated Lexus interpretation of the Supra Turbo. It will be powered by a 600HP twin turbo V8! See the Feb Motor Trend for spy shots - it looks mean.
Nissan
GTR - yes, the wait has been seemingly endless. What started out as a show car in 2001 still is not on the streets. When it does it is expected to have a 450HP twin turbo V6 (unless they increase it to fight off the new Lexus sports car) and the most advanced AWD and steering system in the world.
Ford
Boss Engine - this is Ford's "hemi killer" engine. Like GM with the Northstar, Ford got caught with its pants down in the HP race by having a relatively new engine that had bore centers too small to get enough displacement to deal with the hemi and Mercedes V8s. I have seen varying reports on whether it will be a pushrod engine or ohc but I have heard the top version has a HP target of at least 550HP.
The Good Guys
Viper - the 2008 Viper engine is upgraded to 8.4 liters and adds variable cam timing to get it over 600HP.
Hemi - ??????
