The HP Wars are on! (will the Charger be left behind?)

It is like the late 60s all over again. HP is soaring and 1/4 mile times are dropping. Just when you thought it was safe to hit the streets with your 425HP 6.1 liter hemi along comes:

    GM

The General has finally woken up. They have several big dogs on the drawing board:

Supercharged Z06 - not content with mid 11s in the 1/4 mile apparently, rumor has it that they are dropping a supercharger on the LS7 and that will push it over 600HP! The price is expected to around $100,000 if early reports are to be believed.

CTS-V - Caddy is going to take that same Vette motor and shoehorn it into the next generation V. Their stated goal is to smoke the V10 M5. Needless to say, any SRT8s without a blower won't stand a chance. It may be "detuned" down to 550HP for the sedan.

Camaro - top version allegedly will have the non-blown LS7 good for 500HP.

Grand Prix - GM is set to announce they will import the new Holden Commodore SS-V and revise it to make the next Grand Prix. Target sales are about 30,000 per year.

new OHC - Caddy is finally replacing the undersized Northstar with a new overhead cam engine. It is expected that it will be able to handle displacements up to 6.0 liters. It will be called the "Ultra" and it will have variable valve and lift timing.

    Lexus

LF-A - it looks like a updated Lexus interpretation of the Supra Turbo. It will be powered by a 600HP twin turbo V8! See the Feb Motor Trend for spy shots - it looks mean.

    Nissan

GTR - yes, the wait has been seemingly endless. What started out as a show car in 2001 still is not on the streets. When it does it is expected to have a 450HP twin turbo V6 (unless they increase it to fight off the new Lexus sports car) and the most advanced AWD and steering system in the world.

    Ford

Boss Engine - this is Ford's "hemi killer" engine. Like GM with the Northstar, Ford got caught with its pants down in the HP race by having a relatively new engine that had bore centers too small to get enough displacement to deal with the hemi and Mercedes V8s. I have seen varying reports on whether it will be a pushrod engine or ohc but I have heard the top version has a HP target of at least 550HP.

    The Good Guys

Viper - the 2008 Viper engine is upgraded to 8.4 liters and adds variable cam timing to get it over 600HP.

Looks like its going to be expensive to play, but a hell of a good time if you can afford it.

All DCX has to do is drop the curb weight of the LY platform, drop in the 392 Hemi and make the T56 optional and they would still be at the head of the class.

It's looking and sounding more and more like the glory days of my youth (1960's). The only thing missing is the non-factory ( wink, wink) sponsored NHRA and NASCAR teams running these new hot rod motors.

*Initial production of the Challenger will begin with 30,000 or possibly 50,000 units at the Brampton plant.
*Following this 3,000-4,000 SRT8 models will appear and "will sport the next SRT's top Hemi brand hot engine."
*The SRT and SkunkWerks Engineering team is working on a "unique model" above the SRT version. It will "be in line with performance cars north of $80,000 range but be affordable...you are looking at a limited production run about a year or so...this HO model will require a hefty down deposit and adding your name to a waiting list months prior to production."
    * A hard folding top convertible version will be offered within 24 months of initial production.
*A myriad of options from power train to optional gearing will follow these variations."

If the Challenger comes out with the reported 425hp, it's going to be a blood bath. They'd better start working on a 500hp target quick. Obviously the CTS-V is not the target for the Challenger, but rumors of a 500hp Camaro and GTO should get SRT engineers attention. Look for the CTS-V to move upscale to compete with the M5 and E63. I suspect the sticker will grow to just shy of $65K making it a bargain to the $85K+ euro sedans. DCX could easily coax 500hp out of the 6.1L for the 300's, Mag's and Chargers. The question is, will they?

Most of the cars on this list are 2 doors and that just won't work for me now. What is out there, I know there must be some, that are as big as these LX cars?

Currently, this new powertrain, coupled with the latest Viper 6-Speed manual tranny is under going testing in other modified SRT8 mules. Though, I was told "MUM" is the word on this powertrain; being silent means for the Shelby fans. SRT rather surprise them with an embarrassing moment at the track then give them edge.
    Any ideas beyond the 6.4L?
