    Thumbs up breaking in period?

The time is almost here. Tomorrow I fly out to pick up my black MSRT8. Since I won't have time to read the owners book is there anything I need to know for the drive home? Do I have to keep it under a speed or can I let it all hang out? I'm driving from HickoryN.C. to Atlanta GA. anymore advice is welcomed.

I would be easy on surface streets and do a few WOT on the highway. That should do for the ride home. Hickory, NC to Atlanta GA in an SRT8. I'm guessin' you'll be home in ten minutes! Enjoy the ride!

The Magnum has a soul. It has a personality, something all too lacking in the automotive transportation appliances everybody else is offering.

Maybe take it a lil easy from dead start to WOT but not really anything to worry about. The 6.1 is run full tilt before it even leaves the factory. Giv'r and don't look back! Enjoy and congrats!

I break in all my vehicles the same.

500 miles - varying rpms, no cruise control, no hard launches, no redline runs.

Change the oil and filter. Top off all fluids.

    Now try to kill it.

    Whereabouts in Atlanta?

I hope you brought your radar detector! I've been up-n-down all those big roads a bunch of times - it's dang hard in an RT to keep out of trouble, I can't imagine an SRT8 - lucky dog...

Like said above, no WOT from a stop, but at highway speeds Dodge recommends some short WOT bursts.

Also on a side note... if you go more than 20mph over the speed limit in NC, you can be arrested, not just ticketed. Be careful.

Short WOT bursts (max cylinder pressure) and frequent downshifting (max cylinder vacuum) help to seat the rings. Avoid long periods of constant RPM / throttle for the first couple of K...

    be careful

please note that 6.1 is shipped with break in additive factory installed. DO NOT change oil early. Use the 3000 mile factory recommended interval which is already excessive with synthetic.

Do anything you want except high RPM in first gear. After 3000 miles you will feel the difference. Mine's at 8 k now and it's really crazy!

Best bet is to read the manual. It has the break in steps. I would recommend using that instead of what other people say and have tried.

ive got just over 2000 miles on mine now. i swear it gets faster each time i drive it.

i take it easy for the first 50-100 miles. then i beat the living daylights out of it till either a) it breaks b) i sell it. the srt8 seems to be doing pretty good so far. like to see what it runs @ 10,000 miles and good weather.

I don't think that the owners manual says anything about break in.. I heard to break it in the way your normally gonna drive it ..

Actually, the manual does address this. Go easy for 300 miles, then they recommend WOT runs!!! Gotta love it.

I've been around a lot of cars. I swear these days you can beat the snot out of cars from day one, and it has no ill effects. There are some articles written by mechanics that actually call this the preferred method of breakin....
