6.1L lifter rattle at start up?

    Hi,

I curious if any of you also experience occcassional lifter ratlle when starting the engine?

Mine doesn't do it every time but it does do it every couple of days. Sounds like one, maybe two, ticking until the oil pressure comes up. I doubt it can hurt anything other than my pride but it is annoying...

I have ~5700 miles and run Mobil 1 oil and filter.

Anyone have their lifters replaced under warranty to solve this?

Do the heads have to come off to get at them? I'm hoping not.

    Thanks in Advance,

    =Bill

heads have to come off to get to the lifters...about 90 minutes of work...if they are on the same side.

Thanks for the quick reply. So add another hour or so for both heads? Sounds like the dealer should be able to handle it in a day without too much trouble.

Lifters, especially these roller lifters will make a little noise until the motor warms up and oil is circulating. It will do it when the motor is warm, shut down, then restarted later, as the oil drains off the cam and lifters, as well as being a thinner than when cold. Unless its loud and violent, no big deal. Its normal. Listen to a Modular motor Ford(4.6 or 5.4) or any LS GM. They are just as loud in the lifter department, if not louder. Every 5.7 I have owned does it in the morning and after started when warm. All of the motors got atleast 50,000 miles before trade in. Even though its a 6.1, the design is the same.

Nothing to worry about. Please don't take it to the dealer, so they can screw something else up. Wouldnt want you to deal with that.

Thanks for the reply. You nailed it, I really don't want the engine opened up. I was hoping going to a better filter (Mobil 1) would get me a quality drain back valve and solve the problem but oh well. Maybe I should try a WIX filter and see what that does for it?

I dont think the filter will help much. I run only Mobil 1 or K&N filters and still get lifter noise.

K&N HP2004 is the number for the filter. I have used them on my hemi trucks and my charger with success. I even use the same number filter on my 318 in my duster and 340 in my cuda. Good filters. Napa Gold are good filters too and a little cheaper than K&N.

I'm so glad you posted this. I've got 7k miles on my msrt and it did it last week on startup...sounded like a car low on oil; only lasted a few seconds but it was a cause for concern. Never heard a pushrod with hydraulic or solid lifters make that sound without being low on oil....weird. So this is normal? It's only happened once so far...

Ah yes, mine does it too...especially when I get up to my oil change interval at 3-4k miles. Car does it with 0W40 Mobil 1 and the 5W40 Mobil 1 turbo diesel oil too. After an oil change it really quiets down and then tends to do it more and more towards the end. Jsut a couple ticks every few start-ups...just like you describe. I've used the NAPA/WIX and Mobil 1 oil filters and haven't noticed any difference.

The SRT engieers said the 6.1 and 5.7 have the same lifters so both HEMIs will do it...I've just come to assume it's normal big hp motor noise.

I have noticed it occasionally. I use Mobil1 0w40 and Mopar filters.

I have noticed no pattern other than it doesn't happen if the car has been run within the last few hours.
Too lazy to have a cool sig...
