    Too Loud of Muffler?

I live in South Dakota. I own a 2009 Dodge Charger R/T. I am currently thinking about upgrading the exhaust, but i am not sure if it's legal. Does South Dakota place ANY restrictions on how loud your exhaust can be such as 5db, 7db. etc?

Please respond ASAP. Thanks a lot!!!

Also, will this VOID my warranty?

Welcome to the forums. How long have you lived in SD, and where exactly? There are some pretty loud exhausts around. Not sure about DB levels, but I'm sure you have nothing to worry about. I have the 6db BB kit and am currently trying to decide which way to go next because I want it louder. I'm thinking about a set of Flowmaster 44's and if that is not loud enough may remove the BB 6db kit. I do not want it real loud, but want to hear that HEMI sound more.

    resonators

You may wish to try removing the rear resos.

It's cheap and effective. Lots here have done it.

I strongly recommend a meet and greet in your area as a great way to audition exhausts. Most everyone will proudly show you theirs. They come in about one MILLION flavors!

I've read about people who have done this and regret it. The cabin drone is excessive.

Best way as mentioned above. Listen for yourself at a local m&g, listen to sound clips. There is a limit though imo. I like my Borla 125, loud deep growl. I wouldn't want to get to loud and obnoxious.. people will think you'd rather be driving a mustang. You don't want to go that low.

    From the South Dakota statutes:

    32-15-17.
Exhaust system and muffler required--Exhaust location--Muffler cut-out prohibited--Misdemeanor. No person may drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor vehicle is equipped with an exhaust system and a muffler both in good working condition and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise.

*It would appear that it is at an officer's discretion as to whether or not the noise is excessive. There is no dB level to be under.

    12.1-31-01. Disorderly conduct.
    1. An individual is guilty of a class B misdemeanor if, with intent to harass, annoy, or
alarm another person or in reckless disregard of the fact that another person is
harassed, annoyed, or alarmed by the individual's behavior, the individual:
    a. Engages in fighting, or in violent, tumultuous, or threatening behavior;
    b. Makes unreasonable noise

*You may violate this statute as well.

An in person exhaust "interview" if you will, is always the best route to go. However, there are numerous sound clips on this website and youtube. Now reading the aforementioned "muffler required" law there in SD, I would suggest you look up clips of people that have cut out the suitcase muffler and replaced with pipe, leaving the stock resonators. The resonators are basically extra mufflers on our lx's, and even if you get pulled over, seriously... your every day joe cop would not know you don't have the actual "muffler" on. Just show him the resonators!
From the sound clips I have heard, the suitcase delete is damn near stock quiet when you are at idle, but as soon as you push the pedal, it sounds like a beast has awakened!
Just my $0.02. I have SLP loudmouth 1 resonators with no muffler or resos and if I could do it all over again, I would have saved a LOT of money by just cutting out that suitcase.
Good luck with your exhaust endeavors!
OH, found the clip on youtube of charger with suitcase cut off... and I retract my previous statement about it's almost stock quiet... it still has that pissed sound at idle, but I LOVE THAT SOUND! lol

Wow!!! I like that sound. Sounds better than my system with the stock suitcase and the 6DB BB kit. I wonder if it would be too loud if I kept the BB 6DB kit on and removed the suitcase? Anyone here do that and have a sound clip? Would be a cheap alternative for the OP.

Ive got the flowmaster super 44's and the BB 4db kit and I wish I would have gone with the 6 db kit. It just sounds like the glasspacks on the 4db kit choke down the exhaust note a little too much.I tried just running the super 44's with no resos and it had ALOT of resonation in the car.I got on the freeway and at 70 I couldnt hear myself think. BB has the clips on his website and the clip of the super 44's with the 4db kit is actually my car.

I didn't think there were enough people in SD to notice a loud exhaust!

We had a 300C come into the shop with this exhaust setup (Suitcase removed). It sounds very close to a Daytona system, slightly different, much louder tone when over 1,200 rpm. Daytona is essentially straight through, with a little bit of chambering to lower the overall volume. The resos are also retuned a little too on the Daytona system. If you want something that sounds good, isn't extremely loud, and don't want to spend the coin for an aftermarket system, find a used Daytona system. The go from 100-150 bucks usually. A good deal considering brand new Daytona systems go for as much as a new aftermarket system.

And by the way, Daytona systems haven't changed for 2009, or any 5.7L system for that matter, so pipe sizes and casings are the same, will bolt up still.

South Dakota is home to Sturgis. Don't bikers have loud exhaust? Do they suspend the muffler laws during the biker fest in Sturgis?

I have Flowmaster Super 40's in place of my suitcase (middle mufflers) and Blastin' Bob's 6db glasspacks in place of the stock resonators in back. It's pretty quiet and without drone. It does have a good sound but I wish it was a little louder. There's no way you would get cited for this combination.

As far as voiding your warranty the answer is no with an exception. Some dealerships will tell you that almost anything you do to your car will void the warranty. This is not true but it's their call. Find a different dealership. The truth is in order for a warranty to be voided they would have to prove that what you did cause another part to break. If you added an exhaust system that wasn't installed incorrectly and melted the gas tank then you voided the warranty on the gas tank, for example.
