    power steering resevoir

hi im wondering i looked under the hood today .no i wasnt out for a stroll .......i was installing the afe cold air intake(sorry hammer to expensive for now)hard to justify and extra 300 dolars for an extra coupel of hp.maybe when i do the stroker ,for now good enough.besides if we all just bought stuff and never upgraded to other things there would be nothing in the classifeds ...anyways back to the point .i noticed a wet looking power steering resevoir? could the heat be bubbling up the fluid ? is the power steering cooler made for the police package available ? has anyone else had this problem ?

Mine occasionally needs to be wiped also... Never any drips, just seepage around the cap.

Search for the text 'frankencooler' for the solution to the p/s cooling system issue. p/s line bursts and pump explosions make up the bulk of track day failures for RT and SRT autos. Maybe all of them.

No recent explosions, but one SRT over at 3CF had the p/s pump blow off the car and bounce down the track, and I know of two instances of fluid boiling over and onto hot engine parts. One of them was Cam at Willow Springs. Also of a Charger SRT at the SRT Experience that had to be taken out of service for the day due to heat buildup in the p/s system.

The police system is not available at this time as an add-on unless that has changed. The stock system is a single-loopback fin and tube cooler affixed to the front of the a/c condenser. You can see it thru the grille. The SRT system is much larger and a double-pass... but its been known to fail. The frankencooler solution is extreme, but inexpensive and a permanent fix.

    Thanks Matt.

I had some FrankenCooler work on my "future mods" list, but I figured the PS was a fairly low priority, especially compared to the other two fluids. Guess maybe I ought to re-think that...

The way I figure it p/s is the first one to tackle as its got a history of failure, albeit only failure after extreme use. Since the 5.7 is less capable than the 6.1, IMHO that means we have a potentially serious problem if tracking the car. My p/s frankencooler was HOT after coming off the track Sunday.

Yup, I blew my seal out of mine after a good thrashing at Willow.

But on the bright side if your going real fast, it makes a hella of an effect. Miester said I looked like a jet breaking the sound barrier.............sounded cool coming from his flappers, wish I had pictures.
From wild to extra wild we got you covered with crap ya never knew you needed.

The first 6.1 transformation and it all went down hill from there.

Lucky seal! I didn't know about these failures myself, definitely be checking into a frankencooler setup in the near future myself!

Check the Frankencooler thread for mounting options. CV's install pics are quite a few posts into it but they're there with pics.

yeah i saw 1 mounted on a 300c i liked its location which was high up on the radiator attached to the support mounts for the front facia.ill have to make the mounts to attach it though.it cant go any lower the other coolers occupy that area.

Yeah thats the 'official' location for it. Just remember that you must also relocate the horns as I showed in the p/s cooler post, two or three posts into the thread. Mounting it low alleviates the need to do any welding or horn relocation but also limits you to no oil cooler there (unless you want to try and stuff them both in).
