my trunk lid cover

for starters... im no pro and $$$ always a factor for me. Cant buy the ones made by the pros.
So my broke aZZ have to do the home made one. And I can say i made it myeslf.
I used the styrom from Lowes, i used the 3/4 thinkness.
I made the templet from painters paper.<-- this was the hardest thing to do.


next was to trace to the foam board:



then i sprayed frabric spray on the foam and then put on the fabric [ i got from walmart]

to glue it and make it look nice... is hard and takes time:


i used these to screw to attach to the trunk lid:
i put the lil caps to clean up the finished look:

the O,C,D person i am i had to redo this mod. The edges are not the way i wanted.. looked to unfinished, so i made another foam templet:


i used the blue painter tape to smooth out the edges. this will hopfully make the edges more cleaned up. the 1st one , you could see/feel where i cut it. I used a straigh razor..
i plan on gettin more felt and recover this new version

great DIY job... more than I could tackle... I used that same fabric from wallyworld to cover a sub box onces... stuff was a mess to work with!

Looks pretty fuggin good! I don't know what they cost, but you can buy a foam cutting tool that's basically a piece of heated wire... looks like a coping saw. Melts through the foam so you get much, much smoother curves and cleaner edges. I want to say they run like $25 at hobby stores. If you're going to try again to really nail it to perfection, this may be worth looking at (good info for the net guy to try as well).

Yea, i still have it. My design is different than the fancy ones. Mine covers the whole trunk lid.

Left side looks great, but the right side does not contour as smoothly with the trunk lines. I would cut the template in half and use the L side to mold the R side (in reverse), that way they are uniform. Also, you can use a hair dryer to help bend the foam to contour to the trunk lid curves rather than it cracking on you.

Not dumping on your mod, just trying to give advice. in my opinion, home made Mods that are not perfect are better than aftermarket expensive perfect mods. It gives you a sense of accomplishment to say this is "MY" mod.
