    Dead Battery Sound

Just trying to verify the "dead battery sound" so know if this is what I have. Car wont start. When I try to turn it to the 'on' position i get a VERY rapid and LOUD click, click, click noise. Extremely rapid like a machine gun. It goes for a second or 2 then it stops. happens every time i try to turn the car on. Here's the kicker... if i just turn the key to the on position without trying to start the car, the radio/nav/all internal electronics work fine! BUT the windows go up and down extreeemmeeely slowly. Weird huh?

I always thought that if a battery was dead then no electronics would work. Here everything does (that i can tell) except for very very slow moving windows.

Is that very very rapid and loud machine gun click/snapping a dead battery sound or is there something else at work here?

Yep. A weak battery, not dead yet. Get a new one.

Well A guy on my block charged me and she started up and purred like a kitten. Do you think its time for a new battery or was that just b/c I had just fell asleep in the car with the radio/nav on for about 2 hours (did i forget to mention that in my OP?) Still, 2 hours of radio shouldn't kill the battery... should it?

I was at the track yesterday and used my 25 cent fan mod for the 1st time (and last). We had no more than 1/2 hour between runs and inbetween my 3rd and 4th run, I got that same dreaded sound you so perfectly described. With a jump it kicked right over and it was fine the rest of the day. Apparantly these batteries aren't very good form the factory. I will be looking for a deep cycle marine battery to replace it very soon. If you have a sound system in the car and listen to the radio without the car running, I suggest you do the same.

I had mine replaced under warranty. After hoping it would be ok with a good long trickle charge, the answer was, yes for a day or so...

The Mopar replacement is completely white. That's just so wrong!

You are living on borrowed time. Replace the battery. An Optima would be best.

heh, yeah its a battery. the average life of a battery is 4 years. since theyre made of a stack of plates and acid solution, they build sulphate on the plates as they age. simply put, their best day is the day theyre filled, and its all down hill from there.

Which is what I was going to do until I found out I could get another one for free under warranty. The Optima (or another battery using the same technology) will likely be my next one. Too bad they don't make an Optima that really fits our cars.
