The freaky thing is there was no lightning before or after this shot!

Billy Dixon

1850-1913 Billy Dixon was a well known frontiersman & scout, born in west Virginia he went west at the ripe age of fourteen. He became a buffalo hunter and took part in the battle of ADOBE WALLS in June 1874; during this fight he made his legendry "long shot" with a big sharps buffalo rifle, knocking an Indian from his horse, this shot was taken just under a mile away from his target. Sometime after this battle a surveyor exactly measured the distance it was exactly 1,538 yds (182 yds short of a mile). On 12 September 1874 Dixon a scout and four soldiers were involved in the buffalo wallow fight, attacked by about 125 KIOAS and COMMANCHIES on the open prairie near the wa****a river , in what is now HEMPHILL COUNTY, TEXAS, the six men sought refuge in a buffalo wallow (a shallow depression made by buffalo ). With one man dead and the others wounded, Dixon saved the survivors by bringing a relief force of soldiers . He continued as a scout till 1883 when he homesteaded a claim that included adobe walls, where he served as postmaster for twenty years and was the first sheriff of Hutchinson county. Encouraged by his wife Olive, who later became a journalist, Billy Dixon dictated his life to her, the book "LIFE OF BILLY DIXON by O. K. Dixon ( Dallas , 1927 ) " was first published just after his death .
