Question What makes a car look good??

Just because one has money to throw into the car doesn't mean that it's being put too good use. There's plenty of people with no sense of style who start throwing on random stuff, making their car's look like ****. Maybe some don't have a visual mind?? No concept in their heads?? Personally I'm a fan of the less-is-more style, but looking at my buddy's Hulk (SD268) which is no way in the less-is-more category, i have to say i love it, it's executed well and ties in well and is very out there, without the use of chrome wheels or chrome door strips, etc. There's more cars here that i think are done with style but then there are the ones that make us want to puke...

    That's just my opinion...

that is a great question -- one thing that's so obvious is WHEELS.

you can change a basic car into "something' with a great set of wheels.

and hands down IMHO thats the biggest bang for the buck you can get to make a car 'look good."

Understated elegance. If something doesn't go with the "theme" or whatever of the car, everything looks bad. You can have an awesome paint job and nice wheels... and then there is a stick on vent on your door and everything looks like poo.

Great, now Pat is going to have an even more inflated ego, nice going. LOL. I do however agree that his car is well executed.
Also, as you eluded to, there are others that jsut seem to throw on every gawdy plastic stick on chrome piece they can find. Another thing that I've noticed on some cars recently is the lack of attention to detail, gaps uneven, bad bodywork, poorly fitting trim pieces, etc...If you're going to throw all that money into a car, make sure it's done right at least.

I agree that less is more. I think the simple act of demolding make the car look cleaner. it also makes it suceptable to parking lot dings, but I like the look. My .02 more or less.

To reinforce...my opinion is that the suspension drop relative to the fender gap, followed next by aftermarket tasteful wheels, which are in proportion to the overall visual "weight and bulk" of the car....really can turn most cars into something at least unique, if not stylish and cool....

For example, I honestly feel the "best" size wheels for the LX platform is probably a 21 inch fitment, because the car has such a long wheelbase, and these are big cars to begin with...the 21 inch would be the best compromise for road comfort, performance, and aesthetics. But, 21's are rare in our bolt patterns....so you end up at 22's to not look like the wheels are too small for the car (yes, I do think 20's are too small....if you really look hard at the wheelbase on the LX and let the images of 20's sink in, in comparison they are just a tad too small of a diameter to look in proportion with the LX)....but then when you upgrade to those, you need to drop the suspension to have it look good, not like a 4 x 4......

Other than that as a start, there are so many other things that can be done to customize a car, it kind of comes down to personal taste vs. general concensus.....Just like I think my car looks better than everyone elses (let's say), the general concensus may not feel that way...it's all shades of grey.

Seemingly, wheels you can get a sense right off the bat whether everyone thinks they look great or not....

And of course, there are the performance purists who use performance improvement as their sole guide to everything they do to a car, who goes by another entirely different set of criteria....

I like to think I fall somewhere in between, maybe about 65% performance oriented and 35% style oriented......To each his own...that is the country we live in and the freedom we are afforded.....Just don't park some POS Pep BoyZ project car next to my ride, please.....

Don't know if this is a good fit here, but the nicest thing I've seen on my car was a SOLD sign at the dealership.

There is a time and a place for everything.... this applies to cars also.

    examples:
old school cars pre 1980's - like chrome and chrome looks good on them.

1980's - 1990's - the euro look was in, blacked out trim, etc... alot of black but little to no chrome.

2k to now - monocrhomatic color, 1 color to rule them all!

There is a car lot near me that sells "Used" cars... he only has certain cars on his lot, caddies, 300's, magnums, lincolns, benz, etc.... will not see a ford fusion, or chevy impala on his lot. Another thing you will fins is that every car on his lot has CHROME 20-24 rims, chrome, door pillars, door handles, mirrors, body modlings, etc.... All that bling, is put on by him at his lot! He buys em at the auctions and dolls them up like that to sale.

Debadge, paint your grilles and any other "plastic chrome" parts to match your paint job and tint the windows. You will get more than enuff compliments on your ride!

Agreed with all prior posts...if I had to choose only one thing it would be rims!! I've always said rims make a vehicle! They can also break it so of course the proper choice needs to be made...but I'm sure most ppl that will read this already know that so I'm gonna stop typing on my phone and maybe get back to work hahaha

I guess it's all a matter of taste and preference. I like a paint scheme that is clean and understated, even some two-tones are nice, like the black roof & pillars on a different colored car. Flames and skulls...not for me. I'm not saying they're ugly, and though there are some that are very well executed, they just don't make me go 'wow'.

A nice set of rims really sets a car off too. Something that helps with the cars stance, and yet remains purposeful in terms of handling and performance (this leaves out those stupid-looking 30" wheels and any type of spinner nonsense). I'm a fan of form following function, and that being said, ineffective and improper use of aerodynamic equipment and stick-ons just make the car look stupid.

If all else fails, there's always the swimsuit-model-draped-across-the-hood option.

What makes a car look good????
The eye of the beholder, in other words if it looks good to the owner then that should be enough...I agree that sometimes things don't look good on a car, but it depends on what the owner likes and not really what everybody else likes... For instance MY car, I bought it because I REALLY liked the way it looked in the stock form, I added an AAR stripe because I LIKED the way it looked, but other then taking the side molding off the car to clean it up a bit I don't plan on changing the wheels or painting anything else on it, or lowering it or making it louder, because to ME it LOOKS GOOD, and that's all that matters... If you like it fine, but if you don't like it that's fine too you don't have to drive it I do...BUT the MAIN reason I like it the way it is, is because I can't afford to do anything else to it....LOL.

See, I'm not a big fan of huge wheels. Nice rims can improve the look, but IMO, they're not as important as the rest of the look of the car.

For example, IMO, the SRT front fascia is a MUCH nicer aesthetic improvement than a set of big rims on any Magnum. A lowered stance plays into it, making the car much more sporty. I'd love to do it myself, but these snowy NY winters prevent me from considering it.

One of the biggest things that bugs me about the Magnums is the channels and divots that you see throughout the car that seem like an incomplete part of the theme. The channels along the top of the door panel inside my 2005 R/T seem like they were meant to contain a strip of something; the bottom two spokes of my steering wheel look like they're missing pieces that match the top spokes. The channels where the SRT chrome strips would be on my bumpers (if I don't have the strips, then why are they there?!) are another peeve. It seems to me like they break up some of the beautiful simplicity of the car, distracting the eye from the overall form. I feel the same way about the door moldings; they are visually distracting and break up the form of the vehicle.

Not everyone agrees however. PSJanis and I have talked about our cars and he prefers the door molds and the bumper grooves, stating that the car looks too plain and empty without them. So, it all comes down to one's own tastes, ultimately.

that really depends on what the owner feels like doing with the car, so yes it is really subjective
