    VIN number decoding information

    In light of this post by myself, Mr. Dodge and BlackMagnum:

    I'll just watch you guys figure this out, since I'm at 147861.

    since OBT has VIN######164982
    .......and I have VIN######123911......................
    then there will be................ 41071 cars built between us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Don't worry JD...I don't think there will be THAT many cars in between you!

    I was wondering if someone FROM Brampton could enlighten us on the VIN assignment system? Is there some rhyme and reason behind the VIN's?

    Thanks in advance,

    Dennis

    Plant : Bramalea, Ontario, Canada
    Serial Number : 164982

    So I went back and looked up BlackMagnum's VIN and entered it and it came back as an invalid VIN.

    Anyone else have a Magnum VIN they can try at:

    http://www.allpar.com/mopar/vin-decoder.html

    How about trying it with some 300 VIN's to see if they work?

    Here are the Magnums FROM my local dealership. None SHOW up in the database, so it's probably not up-to-date.

    Here's what I got for a 300C:

    Country : Canada
    Make : Chrysler
    Type : Passenger Car
    Model Year : 2005
    Safety System : Dual Air Bag; Active Restraints
    Body : Body not in database!
    Series : Special/Sport
    Style : Style not in database!
    Engine : Chrysler: 2.5L V6 SOHC MFI 168hp@5800rpm
    Check Digit : 8
    Plant : Bramalea, Ontario, Canada
    Serial Number : 124028

    Guess it's not up to date for the '05 models.

    Hhhmmmmmmmmmmm, that's interesting. I ordered a Magnum RT and the VIN number they gave me on the 800 number started with 2D4GV58235H. Makes me wonder what the 4 vs 8 in the third field signifies??

    I just ran the Vin for my Magnum RT and got exactly the same info as OBT above with the exception of the serial number of course, mine being 147647. Even the CHECK digit was the same.

    The National Transportation Library (NTL.gov) lists the manufacturer (the second digit "d") as Mercedes Benz

    From another thread, I copied this - looks like it's not quite accurate for the magnums, but it did work for my 300

    Here's the general TABLE for an LX:

    1 Country of Origin
    1 = Built in US by DaimlerChrysler Corporation

    2 Make
    B = Dodge C = Chrysler

    3 Vehicle type
    3 = Passenger Car

    4 Vehicle Safety
    A = Restraint System Active Front & Side Air Bags (CGS)
    B = Restraint System Manual/Active Uni-belt (CGA)
    D = Restraint System w/o Air Bags (CGJ)
    H = Restraint System Active Driver & Passenger Air Bags (CGW)

    5 Vehicle Line
    A = 300 / 3000C / SRT-8 (RWD)
    K = 300 (AWD)

    6 Series
    B = 4 Speed Automatic (DJ6)
    E = 5 Speed Automatic (DJG)
    4 = 300
    5 = 300 AWD/TOURING
    *6 = 300C
    7 = SRT-8

    7 Body Style
    3 = LX - 48

    8 Engine
    G = 3.5L 6 cyl. 24 V (EGG)
    R = 2.7L 6 cyl. DOHC Flex (EER)
    H = 5.7L V8 HEMI (EZB)

    9 CHECK Digit

    10 Model Year
    5 = 2005

    11 Assembly Plant
    H = Brampton Assembly

    12 thru 17
    Vehicle Build Sequence Model Year Assembly Sequence

    Early production

    Mine was the 140th built. I wonder how many were numbered for internal use? I could have one of the first built for sale!!!
