Unable to heat the meats with my R/T!

This is gonna sound kind of dumb, I'm sure, but I'm wondering about something and figured I'd get some feedback here.

Not that theres any good reason to do it, and its a waste of money, etc, (lets forget about all the practical reasons one shouldn't do it), but I am completely unable to do even a modest burnout in my Magnum.

Now I understand this is by design to a degree. The Mag has traction control, and it has a pretty relaxed rear-end gearing and the torque converter is set to extra-cushy from the factory, but I thought for sure I'd at least be able to give them a good chirp from a standing start.

    No dice though. Nada.

My question is, is this normal? I mean, I don't want to go around town frying the tires everywhere I go..its undignified, for one thing, and expensive, for another.

But I'd still like to be able to do it. Any advice? I've already ordered my superchip..is that a big part of it?

    Thanks!

Seems like some LXs will burn rubber with ease while others won't...the RT I traded for the SRT would lay 5-15' of black marks with the ESP off..

Not a problem for me to lay some rubber in my RT. You are in Florida and once these cars heat up, performance does drop. Also, are you on the stock rims/tires? If you upgraded to a wider tire, maybe this could factor in?

I was never able to do it from a standing start in my RT and sometimes in my SRT. If I hold the brake a little in my SRT, most of the time it will light them up unless it's hot outside or heat-soaked engine..

Most people get them going by doing a brake torque.

Mine would do a stellar braketorque ----> burnout transition... You did turn the ESP off, right? Wider tires or larger diameter tires will hurt your chances of fogging up the block, but you should definitely still be able to light 'em up. If the car happens to have under 300 miles on it, know that DCX built in a nanny to keep you from abusing it before it's broken in. If you have more miles than that, and stock tires, they should be long gone by now :-) Braketorque it some and see if that helps. And who cares if it's practical... it's fun!

Its a stock 2006 R/T, about 4700 miles. I got it with about 3500 miles on the clock. Stock rims/tires. I did turn ESP off and I tried brake-torquing it, but it just hooks up every time without even a chirp.

It will squeal 'em around corners, but thats not really what Im going for. It seems from what I'm reading here that some 'got it' and some don't.

There wasn't an option for a taller rear end gearing in the R/T's, was/is there? They're one size fits all, I thought.

I just got my K&N typhoon in, will install it this weekend. Maybe after that and the superchip I'll be able to waste some money by leaving rubber all over the road.

If you stand on the brake and the gas at the same time with the ESP light on I guarantee it will smoke the tires.

no, do NOT stand on the brake... only hold the brake down as lightly as you can to keep the car from moving.. push the gas pedal and the brake at the same time.. adjust both... use your left foot to keep up with the gas as the RPM's go up... eventually you will feel the car "bind up", and you know the breaking point is near, that is when to mash the gas... you will need less brake once the tires start spinning, to stay still...

You can then ease off the brake as the tires are spinning do to the long, smokey burnout with scuff marks on the pavement for as long as you care to wear your tires out.

Also note, you do NOT need to keep the gas at WOT to do the burnout... just a short little jolt to get the tires moving. Most successful burnouts occur when you let off the gas, and let the tranny shift into 2 or 3... the tires are spinning, need very little power to stay spinning... back the throttle off once it gets going and you won't run into the rev limiter (which shuts you down and causes the tires to hook up right away)...

I have no problem getting the tires to spin with the ESP off. Like lafrad said, apply just enough brake to get them spinning then let off a bit and feather off the throttle to keep from hitting the rev limiter. Once you get em spinning, you can ease of the brake to leave your mark!

Only 1 gear set for the rear on the RT...the RT I had would smoke em w/o brake torque...my brother's RT will barely chirp em but will smoke em if he brakes...if you can't get em to light up by brake torque something must be wrong...maybe your ESP is not turning off....you might try the GSM ESP mod..

Mine just chirps and goes. Part of me is bummed by that, and a bigger part of me says "If I want to loose traction, sit in one spot and spin, then I could sell this car, and get 5 halfway decent old-school RWD cars, with no technology. When one breaks, go to the next one."

Not bashing those that want to spin/burn out, kinda wish mine would too. I'm just thankful for the traction they designed the car with.

Yeah, I agree to a point. Doing burnouts is pretty much undesirable from most practical points of view. Its bad for the tires, bad for the rear-end, bad for the driveshaft, tranny, etc. Bad all around.

But..it seems like the car ought to be able to do it, so I just wondered.

It's possible the tires are still just nice and new and gummy. These are the goodyears, not the conti's that came on the 05's. That might be a contributing factor as well.

I also have the stock GY tires. They're really not TOO bad I guess. I'm not too impressed with them in the rain.

I agree, and understand your issue. Seems like you and I got one of the "other" cars, one of the ones that won't roast them off like some here.

Ok, I tried searching the forum for "GSM ESP mod", but the terms are too short for it to search on.

What is it? The mod, that is.
