I think they are just held in by two tabs on each side.

i have had a bunch of these apart. You do need to remove the airbag first.

You have to remove the airbag to take the steering wheel off too... it's just some bolts from the back and then unplug it (the airbag).

it's only 2 bolts and 2 connectors on the back of the bag. you will have to remove it to get the wheel off.

If you're talking about the two silver pieces at the bottom of the wheel you should be able to slip a credit card (or feeler gauge as suggested) under the outside end and they slide right up pretty easily.

To remove the top two (with the buttons), you'll need to remove the airbag to get something underneath them and pry them out.

I notice though that you have an '05. Did you buy it used? If yours is like my brother's, it didn't come with those silver inserts on the bottom 2 spokes of the steering wheel and it could be that somebody else glued a couple of them on.

Well, the bottom ones on the '06 and later cars come off very easily so I'm guessing that the top ones on a non-EVIC car are glued on or fasten similarly to the button housing.

I'd go ahead and pull the airbag off (be sure to disconnect the battery and wait at least 10 minutes) to see if you can figure out how they attach. If they use the same basic wheel for all cars, then it's probable that the upper inserts fasten similarly to the buttons and you can pry them out from the bottom. It takes a bit of force, but it will help if you can slip a thin screwdriver along the sides and push them in to help free it up.
