I was the only one in my office today, so I decided to bail out a little early. It's a gorgeous day out - 75 degrees, sunny, a couple of poofy white clouds in the distance - who could blame me?I got on the road at about 2:30, windows down, the Stones blasting on the stereo ("Can't You Hear Me Knocking" for those who care), Ray-Bans on, and frankly feeling like a little bit of a bad @ss. I had been driving a friend's 3 series BMW for a couple of days, which had been fun in it's own right, but I was glad to be back in the R/T.
So there I am, thoroughly enjoying myself. As I get on the freeway, I look in the rear view mirror, and what do I see looming large, but my opposite. The yin to my cool-vanilla Magnum's yang. A black 5 series BMW station wagon. He zipped past me and into the far left lane. I got over when I could and slowly started moving next to him. I know almost nothing about non-M bimmers, but this was obviously a clean well cared for car. For all I knew, this could be a good run. I pull beside him and look over. He looks back at me and I grin and give him the nod. He gives a little smile and obliges me by taking off. I gave him a second to make sure he was really going for it and I hit the gas. The hemi roars to life - dang, I forgot how good this thing sounds with the windows down! I'm at his bumper...I'm at his rear wheel...I'm at his back door... Before I know it I'm back even with him then in a blink of an eye I'm well past and going away hard. I let off and look over to hopefully give a wave or a smile, but he did the ricer fly-by without even looking.
Oh well, I give him credit for being game for a run, but it's too bad he was a poor loser. Just made my ride home on a beautiful day that much more fun.![]()
