Cool Shaved and Painted Intake and Latest Valve Covers

Here is my latest, and probably final, valve covers. Thanks to those who helped me decide on the white, I'm very happy with them!

I also decided to do a little () work on the intake. Hey, who says you have to take the intake off to shave it? My back is killing me, but I'm so glad I did it!

And here's what I did with that nasty hose that goes down the intake. Re-bent it with a heat gun, and put it down the passenger side.

Looks nice but how about a little info on how you did it?

What did you use to shave it and get that great finish ON the car?

    Looks great!!!

But now I want to see a set of covers in Hemi Orange!

You may laugh, but Token's Orange cover gets more attention than my 6.1!

It helps to be tall! I first used a hack saw blade to get the large pieces off, then I used a 4" grinder with a flap disk to get it filed down further. Then on to the sandpaper. I started out with 150, then went to 220.

To paint, I taped off all the obvious stuff, but not along the sides of the intake. I just stuffed paper towels down the sides. I was sure to cover up where the aluminum of the heads are with the wadded paper towels. It would have taken a LOT of time to mask everything off, so I wasn't going to do that. The towels work great. Notice how the intake is basically two parts, lower and upper. Both parts are black from the factory. You're not really painting (or will notice) the lower part, so that's what the paper towels are shielding.

I used Rustoleum paint for Plastic. Then I wanted a bit more shine (at the time) so I put a few coats of clear Duplicolor over that. I put lot's of coats of the black, it's layed on pretty heavy.

I painted on Saturday, and didn't start the motor 'till Sunday morning. Man was it stinky! All day Sunday it was giving off fumes. But hitting recirc on your HVAC takes care of that problem. Kinda odd how much odor fromt the engine bay you can get on the inside!

Now that it's done, I'm loving it, but I'm not 100% on the "shiny" intake. It doesn't match ANYTHING under the hood. The valve covers are shiny, but they're also a wrinkle finish, and the intake is totally smooth. I'm thinking a more satin look would be better. Or you could use black wrinkle paint and then clear coat that. I like plain wrinkle, or satin, but it's harder to keep clean. This intake will be a snap to clean.

Edit: Forgot to mention. When painting, I put down a big drop cloth surounding the whole engine bay, and fenders. Don't want overspray!
And I suggest you DON'T do this project unless you KNOW it's not going to rain, or be too windy. What a royal pain in the arse. I had a few little repairs to do because I got rain dops on the paint. Then, I put a thin painters plastic over the hood, and me, like a paint booth. The dang wind came up, and plastered the plastic RIGHT ON TO THE WET PAINT. I can not even tell you how pissed off I was. I had to take the front two runners down to the plastic again, and re-paint. Man I was steamed. Moral of the story, pull the car into the garage. If you don't have a garage, take the time to secure the plastic better!

I wonder what it would look like to have the intake painted in orange, instead of the covers? That would be more in keeping with the original look of the 60's, since it was the air cleaner that was orange, with black valve covers. I imagine that would be cool.

It was great to meet you too, Jim, that was a fun day!
