    Royal Purple synthetic oil

I never heard of ROYAL PURPLE before today -- took my stealth bomber RT in to my local KWIK LUBE for my 2nd oil change @ 6043 miles --was ready for synthetic, and asked for MOBIL 1 which I've used for years in all my vehicles(used regular 5W20 PENNZOIL for change #1 @ about 2000 miles to break her in right)

Anyway, my KWIK LUBE guy says, "no Mobil 1 (5W20), but we have ROYAL PURPLE. ??????? (Actually he says Mobil 1 doesn't come in 5W20, which I've read otherwise in these forums).

Anyway, the ROYAL PURPLE comes from right up the road (Porter, TX) so I felt like I could drive up the road and yank on their chain if there's a problem, and Houston's a big OIL TOWN anyway, so WHY NOT? He brings me their brochure, which claims HP increase and MPG increase. The oil change is $3 more than MOBIL 1 (7 quarts) and they (RP) recommend 12000 mile intervals.

Bottom line -- my RT has ROYAL PURPLE 5W20 -- hope the claims (HP & MPG) are true.

They back it up with testing @ www.royalpurple.com so I'm impressed.

Just FYI -- this is not a commercial for RP, but looks like another good synthetic oil choice for high performance engines.

I'm running RP now and have most certainly noticed my Mag is a bit spunkier. I'm not sure I'll run it 12000 between changes, but I'm a fan of the better throttle response and what seems to be an increase of 1-2mpg (only had two tanks thru it since the change).

CoolV -- I noticed going thru threads tonight, that you were one of the few who had gone with RP -- I too will probably run 6-9K between changes (like I've done for years). They do say to change filters every 3K, which I've never done. But I guess I could be sold on a better (K&N ??) oil filter.

Hey, choices are good to have -- years ago (about 1989 I started using Quaker State SYNQUEST -- eventually it was impossible to find. Went to PENNZOIL (whatever they're synthetic is) and when that got hard to find settled on MOBIL 1, which I still think is as good as it gets. But in reading thru all the threads, it's apparent the oil weight (5W20) for the RT HEMI is more important than the brand (I didn't know until today that the MDS performance depends on the oil weight???) so when my lube guy said he didn't have MOBIL 1 (in 5W20) but how about ROYAL PURPLE, it took me a few questions and answers, but it looks like this is gonna be OK.

I'm liking what I hear about throttle response and MPG -- bring it on!!!

I have seen RP at car shows where they do ol' test that you have seen on TV a million times with every motor honey that comes along, where they take a roller bearing
and grind it against the shaft of a spinning motor.
The "other oils" make it stop, but with RP it keeps spinning.

I am positive that without a doubt the RP is the best oil you can use,
however if it is really worth all the extra money per oil change I am not sure.
Iam going to give a shot next oil change.

V-BOB --I've always justified synthetic oil by longer intervals between changes -- so in my mind the price is the same or less than the old DINO oils. AMSOIL pushes 25,000 miles between changes (with a filter change at 12,500) and at that rate AMSOIL is a hell of a lot less expensive than DINO oils every 3000 miles.

So, bottomline, if you think it's the best, it should outlast all the rest, and the per quart price issue should go away.

    My two cents.

I've used Redline synthetic in all my cars for some time. I used it for 80K mi in my old Taurus SHO V8 and when a partial tear down was done to weld the camshafts (what a nightmare) the cam covers were VERY clean.

While it is easy to justify a longer drain interval with the synthetic lubricants, DCX is going to give you a very hard time on a warranty claim if you have a lubrication-based failure and can't prove you changed the oil per the manual.

I have always maintained the factory recommended intervals during any warranty coverage. After that, I didn't see anything wrong with stretching it out a bit.

I do remember reading an article done by Hot Rod magazine and they said that it did in fact give a couple horse power just by changing the oil. (they dynoed it) It was not an advertisement.I am switching at 3000 also.

Royal Purple is very very good oil. I might start using RP and go to the maximum 6k oil change intervals.
I'm running RP right now in the differential in my Ram.

    temporary gains

I remember reading somewhere ( a few years bacK) it was said that RP does truly give increased dyno #'s but only immediately after the oil change. This temporary "high" was due to some chemical reaction that diminished as the oil aged. Wish I could remember where I read that!

I can't verify MPG increase with RP -- my MPG is all over the board -- got down in the elevens (11.9) but now I'm back in the thirteens (13.4) after just getting home from a 70 mile roundtrip (ranging from 80 to 110 MPH) and the MDS was bringing it up. I gotta believe RP is excellent oil -- car is running like a TOP.

be careful of their xmsn fluid. i just tore down a manual tranny today with a friend of mine that used the correct gear weight of RP. but it was so heavy it tore up the bearings. we were clueless until we talked to another who had the same shrieking noise and couldnt figure it out until he replace the output shaft bearing and both the gear stack bearings.

funny thing is, the RP is soo thick that you cant feel anything wrong with the bearings until you wash the stuff out.

but the engine oils pretty good.
