Arrow Relocate your power steering reservoir to facilitate a longer air filter!

I happened to mention, in a recent note to Rev.Hammer, that the power steering reservoir was certainly a nuisance in its present location, preventing the use of a much longer air filter element. "Why don't you move it?" was his response. He then proceeded to inform me that the 350 hp Chargers can accept a larger filter than can the 300Cs & Magnums due to a different mounting location of the power steering pump from the factory.

The Rev. pointed out that by simply using the mounting slot at the mid-point on the coolant tank to suspend the power steering reservoir rather than the end slot, the reservoir is cleverly tucked out of the way of the air filter. Doing so provides room for an additional 3 or 4 inches of filtration, perhaps more depending on the filter, when using a conical air filter. To do so merely move the small locking tab at the base of the slot aside with your thumb and lift the power steering reservoir straight up and out.

Another great tip from the wily Reverend here: While it's out, rotate the hose clamps 180* with a pair of standard pliers to keep them from snagging the filter. Note that you're rotating only the clamps, NOT the hoses.

Then drop the reservoir gently into the mid-tank mounting slot, making sure the locking tab engages, and Voila!

Amazing! So simple, yet so effective.

Note: Relocating the power steering reservoir to the mid-point of the coolant tank requires the removal of most existing heat shields or filter boxes.

    Pure genius! Thanks, Rev.

(Not sure if you have room for any more green jelly beans up there but I aim to find out. )

Edit: Despite the sheer simplicity of performing this configuration change, knowing how fond many are of pics I'd have included them if I had them. So far I've merely verified [using the V-6 Charger courtesy car the dealer provided while servicing my car] how simple removal of the power steering reservoir from its present location is, and that there is, in fact, the second slot at the mid-point on the coolant tank to receive it. When I receive my longer filter, remove my existing heat shield and relocate the power steering reservoir, I'll add pics. In the meantime, anyone who has been stymied at fitting a longer filter can easily proceed with the fix with the present, clear, instructions.

It would be inappropriate of me to withhold information of this import for weeks pending arrival of parts.

I *knew* that was coming, MAGNUM8R, but, with all due respect, it's so clear and so simple that pictures truly are not required. It's the *concept* man! And it's really quite exciting - a true breakthrough for those desiring to mount as large a filter element as possible.

Edit: Post #1 edited to add comment re. pics.

Wow. Once you get a pic or two (for thoroughness) this should be added to the KB! Poor MattRobertson is gunna have another version of Frankentake. I can smell it. "You want a filter HOW LONG? OMFG!" or something like that will be heard.

And here we thought 12" was a monster! *grin*. Sounds like we could go 15" or 16" maybe?

Do a search for BHAF. It's very popular with the turbo diesel folks. Talk about an air filter! Attachment 5186

Truer words were never spoken, Bandit.

All - Anyone know how to contribute beans to the Rev for his extremely significant discovery here without him having posted to this thread?

This interested me so much I had to run out to the garage in the rain to check it out. My reservoir had to be removed to get my filter in, and it took a while to figure out that it could be done. It's a great idea IF you don't have an airbox right in front of it like I do:

I never even noticed that this slot was there.

It's a great piece of invaluable information even if you do have a filter box, k9eros. Hence the following note in post #1: "Note: Relocating the power steering reservoir to the mid-point of the coolant tank requires the removal of most existing heat shields or filter boxes."

You now know what all the available options are and can thus make a much more informed decision as to how to proceed should you desire to install a larger filter, which is, afterall, the basic premise of post #1.

Sorry, I never noticed that part, I got kind of excited and must have skipped over it...
It was a major PITA installing the filter and Airaid didn't mention anything about how to get that long filter in when it was hitting the reservoir. It took a few minutes for me to figure it out, it should have been less but in a 100+ degree garage with sweat running in my eyes my brain wasn't working right. I was really hoping that I could do this relocation, it would have made R&R'ing the filter easier for cleaning. Guess I'm a dumba$$.

Hardly, k9eros. But you are now more fully informed, as are we all now thanks to Rev.Hammer, of the available options whenever more space to the rear of the left headlights is needed.
