I would go to another dealer....I went to my dealer and he told be that it just needs to be recalibarted....I also didn't have to pay, but some dealers might charge and hour -1/2 hour of labor. Hope this helps and IMO I wouldn't go back there if they don;t know how to do this.

    lookin for something like this?

yes, you should be more worried about it. even if the PADL (passenger airbag disabled lamp) is off, it doesn't mean the airbag will deploy as intended.

    how it should work:
    - when the OCM (occupant clasification module) detects that the seat is empty, the PADL is off and the airbag is suppressed.
    - when the OCM detects a weight equivalent to a rear facing infant seat, the PADL is on and the airbag is suppressed.
    - when the OCM detects a weight equivalent to a child, the PADL is off and the airbag is enabled and if necessary, deploys but is limited to a low risk deployment level.
    - when the OCM detects a weight equivalent to or greater than a fifth percentile female, the PADL light is off and the airbag is enabled and if necessary, deploys based on the severity of the impact.

NOTE: the fifth percentile female is determined as follows. if all potential occupants were averaged by size and plotted on a bell curve, the majority of occupants would be in the middle of the curve.at the outer edges of the curve, some occupants would be very large and those at the other end would be very small. at the fifth percentile range (smallest 5%), the majority of occupants would be female.

if the OCM is out of calibration, the airbag could deploy at too high force, too low force or not at all which may not adequately protect the occupant.

OCS calibration can only be performed by your dealer as it requires the use of a starscan and seat weights specially designed to mimic RFIS, 6 year old child and fifth percentile female.

if you value your occupants, get this done asap.

it's not the airbag that is recalibrated, it's the OCS (occupant classification system). if your dealer doesn't know how to do this, which i find hard to believe, tell them to learn.

from starscan main menu >>> ECU view >>> OCM >>> more options >>> system test.
    follow onscreen instructions.

not unless they decide to do you a favor and update your PCM. OCS recalibration does not affect software. it just forces the OCM (module) to learn seat weight sensor values at different stress levels.

But I'd always have a 'stock' tune whenever there even the remotest chance that someone would tamper with it, and since they obviously don't know the starscan very well, they just might be tempted to try all the options out on your car.

You just can't never tell what some of these guys are going to do...

Tony - I put a post it note on my passenger side dash " If your in this seat and we are in an accident you will die" that seems to cut down on teh # of people asking for rides

its rather simple to recal, you just need an ass-o-meter and thats a tool only the dealer has.

Mine was finally fixed (mostly) but it seems to be very close to setting off the light andf its been flipping out over the last few days.

It was fine from when I picked up teh car until I got back from cali :/

Whenever my little white dog hops into the the right front seat the airbag light lights, so it can detect 14lbs real nice.

Rob: Very Cool Sign to have on your dash - that rocks..
