    Opinions on Extended Warranty

I am going to the dealer later this AM to get a key and remote made and programmed. The dealership I bought my Magnum at is paying the $194 for the new key.

I am going to pay the $150 transfer fee to get the 7-70 powertrain warranty transferred to me.

For $1245 additional ($1495 total) I can extend the original 3-36 warranty to 7-70. To include everything else on the car except for glass, brake pads... etc. This will include roadside assistance, towing, loaner car and will have a $100 deductable. It's a Chrysler Warranty, so it'll be good nationwide. I am not normally a sucker for an extended warranty, but with all the gadgets on the Maggie, this seems like a good deal to me. ESP, NAV, 6 Disc changer, heated power seats, sunroof, you all know all the goodies they have.

What's everyone think? $1245 for all that for 4 additional years or 34,000 miles.

    Is it WORTH it?

Some people love the extended warranty, as for me, I don't like them.

A factory warranty is better than a dealer warranty or a 3rd party warranty.

If you do get it, make sure that it is a factory warranty.

It's not a question of "liking" or "not liking", it's a question of math. And the math says it is a designed to make lots of money for the dealer and is not worth the cost. But hey, some people buy a Prius to "save money" LOL, and I'm sure there is going to be a torrent of "I had the warranty and my..........broke".

Exactly what I was thinking, I just didn't want to say it.

Having worked for GM in their warranty division, I saw how they screwed people.

When My friend had a video business, we used tobuy warranties for like $15 and sell them for $150. The best thing is these people who buy "3yr warranties" on an item that has a 1 yr warranty that they bought with a "gold" credit card that doubles the warranty on items purchased.

I agree with the assessment that the warrantie is DESIGNED to make the dealer money. Flat out no question, and I normally flat out say no.

But this one was pretty cheap IMO.

and the Maggie has LOT'S of little expensive doo-dads.

    Thanks for the input, ya'll.

Take the money and give it to an independent broker and tell him to buy commodity calls.

I purchased an extended warranty on my Magnum just before the original warranty expired.
So far I have had the power steering rack, tension struts, drivers side catalytic converter, heater blower motor and both banks of rocker arms replaced under the extended warranty.
I know I am glad I bought it. The price was right and it has paid for itself twice over so far.

if I hadn't got mine I would have had an out of pocket of over $11,000 in airbag charges on my car for a problem that took 17 months and 14 trips to fix...

    IMO

    GET IT..

there are too many computers and electronic items on these cars that can go wrong (stands to reason for any late madel cars really) and they are expensive to trouble shoot and replace/repair..

for me a $1500 investment saved me over $11,000.....

Is the car acting funny? Making noises? Showing signs of leaks? History of problems? If not, I wouldn't buy the warranty.

One thing to keep in mind is be realistic how long you see yourself keeping the car. No sense in buying a 7yr warranty if you get rid of the car after 5yrs. I'm sure the warranty people are counting on this to- they know a good percentage of extended warranty buyers will "cancel" the extended warranty by selling the car. If you know you'll be keeping the car for the long run, it might be worth it.

Well people... I bought the warranty. It was $1495. It extends my factory 4 years or 34000 miles. I'll hit the mileage before the time. Hopefully I'll get back on my motorcycle a little more in the next couple years and keep some of the miles off the Maggie.

My RT turned 29,000 miles today on the way to the dealership to get the new key made. It's essentially perfect as far as I can tell. I am the 2nd owner according to the dealership. It sounds good, solid, runs and handles great. Looks shiny new perfect to me.

Still thought the $1500 was a good hedge against all those little fancy doo-dads going tits-up that I like so much.

i'll be paying for my mag for the next 4 years. i got the chrysler extended warranty to make sure i run out of payments before i run out of warranty. i got a smokin' deal on it because i work there. aside from the warranty, it also extends roadside assist for the duration of the contract. there is also a provision for a rental car if your car has to stay overnight. i know many dealers provide loaner cars but most only offer them to people who bought the car from them. whereas the rental provision is good at any dealer.

another thing to remember, not all chrysler extended warranties are the same. some only cover powertrain. some cover mechanicals like power steering components etc. and some cover pretty much everything that the basic warranty does. make sure you know what you're buying.

    here's a tip:
not sure about US but here in canada, if you buy the car new with the extended warranty and you plan on installing mopar accessories, best install them before you take delivery. mopar accessories have a one year warranty. if installed before delivery and added to the vehicle option list (by your dealer), they will be covered for the duration of the contract. <<< been a while since i checked on this so you might want to verify with your dealer.

extended warranties have a healthy mark-up so don't be afraid to negotiate the price.

Extended warranty--Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it!

Extended warranties are a gamble. For a reliable car it's probably a poor bet. You may have made a wise choice.
