    oh this chaps my hide

I just got off the phone with my dealer..

my clock spring and the whole inner steering assembly was replaced..

now this is the pisser part...

Rick tells me, your clock spring was broken on the INSIDE, the cable/spring came unwound..

Yes Rick I knew that I heard it snap...

    then Rick tells me....

"I believe it was caused by our technician, he admitted to me that he was unsure whether he had put it together correctly or not last Friday"

    WTF?????????

the tech was "unsure" of whether or not he put the steering wheel assembly back together correctly...

anyone see the flaw in this?????????

does this tech have any idea the Liability he just opened himself and that dealership too??????????

    holy crap....................

Hey, at least they attmitted fault. My Dealership scraped up the floorpan and bent the exhuast shields, and then tried to say I did it. This was about two weeks and 300 miles after I took delivery. They finally admitted fault and and repaired the damage at no charge after some intense discussion.

oh I've never had that problem at this dealer.. the car wash guy backed my car into a pillar and they called and told me what happened, and the would fix it ASAP..

when I complained about the cracked panel that I found from last weeks sunroof repair, they didn't even questionit, just ordered the part and replaced it..

I think the issue here is the Tech is new, and afraid of losing his job if he screws up..

which is worse? asking for help because you "aren't sure" if you did it right, or not saying anything and getting caught after the fact?

    sometimes people just don't think..

    chaps

the clockspting exists as a way to keep the steering wheel electrical controls "wired" to the rest of the car- the clockspring does not attach the wheel to the column- ther was no danger of loss of control- roadpig

I beg to differ, if it bound, you'd have a hell of a time turning the wheel. Plus isn't it tied to the airbag function?

yes I am aware of that, however for a tech/dealer to state... "I wasn't sure if I put if back together correctly" then release the car to the customer knowing it "may not" have been put back together correctly presents a LARGE liability on behalf of the dealer.

regardless of whether the clock spring is an integral part of the steering mechanism or not, there is an implied liability for the dealer to make sure that the parts are put back together CORRECTLY, before releasing the car to the customer..

based on what happened it can also be concluded that the vehicle was not test driven prior to releasing it to me, because if it had been the tech would have known it was put together wrong.

however I am not complaining about it at this point, because I have had an ongoing issue with my airbag system for 16 months, DCX has always required the dealership to continue to replace the same 2 parts, the clock spring and the steering control module..

because of this incident it was now required that the entire unit (turn signal stock, cruise control stock, telescoping steering module, steering module, shroud and connector) be replaced, because the clasp holding the stock together became stripped and the entire unit could not be held in place correctly or within factory specs.

In doing this I now have the 2006/2007 stock in the car which has the longer connector and a different clock spring and harness, therefore my airbag issue may have finally been resolved, seeing that the 2006/2007 models don't have this issue..

of course the drawback is I also have the 2006/2007 cruise control stock..

Finally Mr I!! That should take care of the air bag problem. If it's still warm enough where you are, once the repair is done, tell them to park your car in the direct sun and let the interior get nice and toasty. Then have them drive it for 5, 10 mins, and if you don't get the light, you're good to go. If the problem is still there, this will show it to them, and they can start thinking about a Plan-B errr C errr D errr errr E????
