Not sure about the LX's but in my last car- the alternator output was controlled by the ECU. That was a real PITA bucause I was running 3 10's and 4 amps, ended up with 3 farad caps, and an xtra deep cycle battery. Never could get it licked.

ANyway- the reason I bring this up- is my last car was a DCX, so maybe all you need is a reflash.

Then again I could be all wrong on this.

Check with an alternator shop, maybe they can rework yours for more output............................

Yeah, what Chuckles said. the creepy part is going to be the computer. If you have a custom system you may be SOL. HAL has a lot of long tentacles snaking out everywhere. Fnky may be able to shed some light on this.

Page 2-1 of the 2006 Doge Charger/Magnum Police Upfitters Guide lists the amperage rating of the police vehicles alternator as 160A full output.

This is the same as non-police V8 and 3.5 V6 cars. It has a paragraph explaining how the computer controls things. When the battery for my camera (how ironic, eh?) is charged, I'll post a pic of that page.

(I don't know where my .pdf of the document went....)

How much "headroom" is in the stock system? In other words, how much current is being drawn, say, at night with all the lights, heat & rear defogger running?

    From police outfitters guide

Sorry, I really need to get the scanner working but for now this will work:
How the computer modulates alternator output

    Typical amperage load by device:

Wow! Just doing some simple math, depending on conditions, there is not alot of room to work with it seems, huh??
