    Mopar CAI noise...I think???

    Howdy All,
Has anyone had any issues with a sort of pinging type of noise one they installed a Mopar Performance CAI on a 5.7l Hemi? I have an 06 Magnum R/T AWD. The noise happens between mild and mid acceleration. I cannot get the moise to happen when parked. It seems to only happen when the engine is under load like on a little incline going up an exit ramp. The noise only comes from the driver's side. It sounds like a ping type of noise. There is also a noise that sounds like a metal on metal tap when I'm crusing with no gas pedal then go to accelerat. I'm not sure if it's related but there is also that sulfer smell (emmisions system) in the cabin when I drive the car like I stole it. Heavy acceleration, high RPM, heavy braking. There is also a hissing type of noise coming from under the car at idle. The dealer can not figure any of this out. They said they checked the exhaust (it does kinda sound like it does when you have an exhaust leak), the intake, the computer and it all checks out. Let me know if anyone else has had any issues or has any ideas.
    Thanks,
    Mike

When you hit the gas the air intake likes to move, maybe something it hitting when it moves.

I installed the MOPAR CAI a few months ago and I get the not quite pinging sound but more of it sounding like the motor wants to choke out. I think the reason is the MDS with it going from 4cylinder to 8 cylinder can't decide which mode it wants to stay in especially at lower speeds and light acceleration and at the beginning of the incline. When I hear it I just give it a little more gas and it's gone.

I am going to check all the connections again as I have heard from a few on the forum that the connectors like to loose up! I get the hissing at idle every so often...I know a few have had this issue and I can't recall but someone may chime in....but my guess is the hiss is coming from the catalytic converter.

Also, the hissing, whistle is normal as well just in case you have that as well.

Hope you get the issues solved.

I guess it's somewhat of a ticking noise....like valve train noise?...injector noise?.......I thought the 4cyl (MDS) mode only kicks in at cruising speeds like on the highway. If I push the pedal a little more the noise does go away. I'm already using 91 octain (the highest we have in Colorado). I get the noise when it's cold or warm. I have my JBA headers and exhaust ready to install but don't want to do that until I find out what's making the noise. I checked to make sure it was secure and not hitting or rattling. hmmmm? 2500 miles, I hope it's not major. The dealer took 2 days and calls to DC and no answers. Any more help out there? Thanks in advance for all your knowledge! Mike~

MDS will kick in at around I believe for mine is 25mph if you grandy drive it around town. The MDS range from what I recall reading on this forum ranges from 22-25mph up to 83 or 85 mph if you are cruising and babying it.

I would stick with 89 Octane and save a few bucks unless you have a superchips tuner and set for 91. Is that ticking noise you hear just at idle? If it is ticking at idle that is normal for the Hemi nothing worry about. Ticking noise is also found on the Ram truck hemi's as well.

CHeck the heatshield bracket that the Mopar CAI comes with. I've seen it on a member's SRT where the bottom of the bracket is making contact with the inner fenderwell and makes sounds while driving. Pull it off and throw some double sided foam tape on the bottom, it's cheap and easy and if it solves your issue then great, if not...... no harm done either way.

That's good information about the MDS...You learn something every day! No ticking at all at idle at all. Like I said it only happends when the car is driving. I think the rpm range is somewhere about 2-2.5K. I thought I was told or read somewhere that I had to use 91....I could be wronge.

I checked the Mopar CAI and every thing is tight and not making any contact.

I'm taking it into the dealer again tomorrow to see what else they can figure out. I'll keep bugging them till I get some answer. Thanks bunches guys!

Yes!!! I'm not sure why reading your post made me feel a lot better, but I guess it's good to know this is at least 'normal' and not a problem specific to my car. Anyway, I have the EXACT same issue. I have been thinking it was tied to the Mopar CAI, but I haven't been sure until I read your post (I only drove the car a little bit before putting the CAI on, so until reading your post I wasn't sure whether I just never noticed it before).

I haven't taken mine to the dealer about it. Sounds like I don't need to bother? What can we do? I have the Superchips on order and was hoping I could "tune" the problem out. I also have Zoomers exhaust on order.

On my recent road trip, I toyed around with different driving techniques in an attempt to isolate the source of the noise. It's definitely a ping. It happens when the car "lugs" - when it is in too high of a gear. For example, during highway driving, selector in D, so 5th gear at 55-65 MPH. Put a little load on it and it pings until you really goose it and get it to downshift. I could eliminate the problem by manually selecting 4th gear and staying there.

I hope we can solve this, otherwise I'm putting the stock air filter back on. It's really annoying. Anyone know how to contact Mopar to ask them why their CAI kit does this? I know the kit came with a prominent legal disclaimer saying Mopar takes no reponsibility for anything...

    Thanks
