Mag is at the dealer now with front end shimmy...

The Mag is at the dealership looking at the front end shimmy that gets worse at 65mph and upbove. iRock had tipped me off about the tie rod ends going bad, so I did ask about those. (Thanks iRock )

There is also a strong burnt oil smell coming from the rear end. On a previous trip there had been a very faint smell, so I was keeping an eye on it.

A little service background on that. It has been sent in for leaking. They checked the fluid and added defoamer. Later a cracked gear was replaced. So, clearly I didn't drive it after that strong smell and waited until the Mag could get into the dealership.

On the phone yesterday he is saying that they couldn't duplicate the issue. Which leads me to believe, that they just drove it around and smelled. Nevermind the fact, I drove 90 miles to that dealership so if it smelled, it would after that trip.

He said that the tie rod ends look fine and they wanted to keep it overnight and check out the bearings, etc. I have to say I'm wondering if they even opened it up and looked at it yet. With the 'couldn't duplicate it' response. Though driving the rental with smooth steering, made my shimmy seem worse.

So, after all of that background information. I'm wondering if the steering box is the issue? And if you guys any thoughts on the rear end?

with their 5 star dealership service, i wouldnt try to draw too many conclusions yet. At the dealership i have used so far, the car sits there all day until you call to pick it up then they start working on it. (yeah i will be travelling a bit to try someone else next time). Im just saying that i agree they might not really have looked at it very thoroughly yet. Sure sounded like the tie rods to me. i have had one replaced @ about 45k miles.

i wish you good luck tho getting it back and fixed up right, im sure it will be good as new soon and after a week of driving, that smile will be back on your face as usual. that was the case with me

Been experiencing the shimmy myself lately. I feel mine more towards 70 mph gets really annoying at 80. Thinking it could be the tie rods or maybe a steel belt in the tire. For those had the ends go bad did the shimmy just about disappear when going thru a curve at 65+ ?

Mine had the same problem it was the rack-n-pinion which the dealer replaced.

Off to the dealer then. Least I'll be getting my moneys worth of the service plan I purchased.
