    Looking for fishermen!

Okay this is off the topic of LX cars, but there is so much knowledge on here that I figured someone can tell me what this is. Other then a fishing pole! I found it at an antique shop. It is 40" long the reel is 8" in diam. and it has metal line. I had to buy it because it is so unusual. Can someone tell me what it is?

We use small rods for ice fishing during the winter months but certainly not with a metal line. The size of the reel indicates lots of line for larger fish to run. Can't wait to hear the answer!

Maybe the metal line is used for fishing grouper or other coral bottom feeders. Less prone to beiing cut. I dunno, Nice find though.

Well, well..... What we've got here is a VERY OLd...fishing rod. Actually, I'm not even sure it Is a fishing rod. The "rod" is too light to be a "deep-drop" rod. Fish that live THAT deep are WAY too massive - they'd bend that rod no problem.

Now the metal wiring IS sometimes used for deep dropping, so I dunno about that part of this particular "thing" shown above....

I'd suggest to look at the IGFA museum for SOMETHING similar...and if they dont have it there, then ask them what they think....heck, you might have found a one-of-a-kind item!! $$

I'll try to do some more digging around too....

    couple questions:

Does it have any kind of "drag" device? meaning something to resist the spool from feeding line out? or is it like ... a hand-line rig?

What is that at the end of the wire line? and at the "rod" tip?

Did you ask the shop owner what it was??

    Talking

My guess is it's an old survey reel. The original spool of wire would have had paint markings at regular intervals.

Okay! We got some fisherman! The tip of the rod has one eyelet. There is a swevel at the end of the line. It does have a drag which I am adding to the post. Maybe more pictures will help. I bought it in a booth full of really old fishing stuff. I bought a 1934 Japanese fishing float as well. Never saw one before. I'm sure it's some sort of fishing pole/ They were asking $200, I paid $150. To me it's worth it!
Hope someone can tell me what I got. The tag on it just said Old Fishing Pole!

To be honost with you, I don't think that was designed for fishing.

It's a cool piece but would be darn scarey with a fish of any sze on the other end.

The wire line would slice and dice under the tension and ripping fight of a big fish.

Betting it has an industrial type use.

Gonna catch more of these with Bipto aboard in the Caribbean next month!!

I'm thinking it's not for fishing either, it doesn't seem like you could cast it well with the wire on it. I'm thinking it's for some kind of industrial/construction use, maybe used to fish ecectrical wires through conduit? it is pretty cool looking what ever it's for?
