    initial sumitomo 255/55/18 review

ok, so wanting to get a set of fairly disposable tires while working out the alignment kinks, i lay my hands on the 90 dollar a piece sumitomo htr sport from tire rack. with an h speed rating, 480 utog it seemed pretty decent. and at 734 revolutions per mile, almost spot on for the speedo

well, now i have them on, and the alignment is dead on as well. so i guess i have to get used to them, as they may be on there a while.

all in all, i'm not too tore up about that fact. they do have a little road noise(not much, just a pinch, but hey, it's a truck tire, ya know?) and they are about 5 lbs heavier than the conti, but overall, i am very happy. very nice footprint, and they look very nice on the car. the ride, and grip are both improvements over the conti's.

aw well, i know this depends on the driving style as to weather you see the following as good or bad.

on the old conti's, i noticed on the two occasions that i turned off the esp and pulled out of a turn to break loose the rear end for a few seconds, that the car would zig and zag back and forth once or twice, then the car would find its line and snap into position so hard i felt my kidneys bruise. with the new tires on i decided to do this, and felt something different. now when you pull out from a stop to hard left or right, the car will still slide, but now the slide is a lot more controlled, with it coming to a quick, yet not jarring end, exactly where i wanted it on the first try.

as well, the burnout and sliding noise is lower tone and quieter. very nice.

did wnat a higher speed rating than i already had, but this seems to work well for me right now. very happy. i may monkey with the pressure later, but for now, staying at the 30 psi the car calls for

how about an update on the tire? How are they holding up now that you've got some miles on them?

6058 miles, tires are great. no uneven wear, barely any wear at all

multiple solo II's and a lot of hard driving. great dry weather traction and good wet. for the money, its a darn good tire!

tire rack is where i got them. the tire rack guy called me to confirm before he sent them out because they are not listed for magnums.

but they fit fine, and so far have been miles above the conti's. by 6k, my contis where already real close to the wear bars

So, how do you like these tires as they wear, then? I'm looking to replace the stock conti's on my R/T, but the choices are limited, and get expensive as hell really fast. How are these in the rain, and how well do they stick in straight line acceleration?

staight line is great. no slip like the conti's. dry driving is wonderful.

rain driving up in tenn is good, even at 80 in rain. rain driving down here on this brown river rock pavement is ok, but if i take sharp curves too fast i feel the esp kicking on.

there's not much wear on the tires yet to even comment on wear. but over the last 6k, they've stayed just as sticky as the first day i got them.

the only thing i dont like is that they have a tendancy to pick up pebbles, and get stuck in the tread.
