How to get good racing video...

    ...from inside the car?

So who's done this..? Anyone..? Grinner..?

I'm looking for ideas on where & how to mount a hand-held camcorder inside the vehicle to get a view of the track while racing...

Would the track have any policies prohibiting this sort of thing?

E-Town next weekend. Funny though, New England Dragway is only about 40 minutes from me, and I haven't been there in years...

One of the folks at our last autocross with BMW M3 had a 4" suction cup mount on the sunroof (it was powerful enough to cause a "dent" in the sunroof and was approved during tech inspection). He also mentioned a setup with two bars from headrest to headrest that seemed intriguing.

I have a still camera that shoots Mpeg 4 video. Very good quality. I've tried a couple of things, but it seems strapping it to the passenger's head rest will be the best. It's even light enough I can Velcro it there.

If you can work in a safety line short enough it can't hit you or make it to the window it would be a good idea. Not realy related but I lost a Garmin GPS-V this winter because I had no second restraint on it, never saw it leave the sled at 75mph in Canada in the dark .

I had an idea on this but have not had a chance to do anything on it, no spare time and all.

    1. Get a piece of wood (12 in. L X 3-4 in. W) and take your headrest off.

    2. Place the 2 poles the headrest sit on on the left end of the board and mark where they are.

    3. On the other end of the board fix something to mount your camera to (part of a tripod or something, the part the camera attaches to).

    4. Drill out the 2 holes for the headrest posts to go thru a little bigger than the holes and reattach the headrest with the piece of wood in between the headrest and the seat.

    5. Attach the camera to the tripod piece that is attached to the wood out to the right of the seat/driver (Kinda in the middle of the front 2 seats).

    6. Turn the camera on and enjoy.

Hope this is clear, I thought this up and just haven't had the chance to get it ready, I am going to do something like this at the SRT Nationals for the Road Course.

I mount it on a tripod I wedge between the seats. The back seat holds one leg and each floor board in da back holds the other two. Here be some footage from it:
    http://moddinart.com/StangRace.mov
    http://moddinart.com/WRXrace.mov
and this racing footage has absolutly nothing to do with your question but dadgum, it's too cool not to include:

O am making a camera mount that will harness between the two headrests, using their post as mounts. Now that my car is getting faster, the camera sometimes aims at the sky from the head letting go when I launch. It's just a cheap little bogan tripod and I can't tighten the head any more than it is. The camera is just too heavy for it.

i did just about that. used wood drilled holes and made it so you can turn and tip for any angle. works well I dont have any pics of it tho. grinner you have a good idea using the two headreasts for weight issues.
