Got Fan Mod? Hot Weather is Coming!

I have completed my Fan Mod design and was going to post in the morning after taking a quick peak at an SRT8, but since you are all SO interested, here you go:

** PLEASE NOTE THAT I HAVE NOT LOOKED AT THE SRT WIRING TO SEE IF THIS APPLIES OR NOT **

The Mod will offer you the following characteristics:

1. NO SPLICING INTO THE WIRING HARNESS! <-- A plus for me
2. NO CODES!
3. BOTH FANS ON HIGH WHEN ENGAGED!
4. OPTIONAL CONTROL WIRING to give you the following:
a. Turn Fans On ONLY When Engine is running
b. Turn Fans On Regardless of Engine State
c. Wire for BOTH options a. and b. (Slightly more complex wiring but not that bad).

I spent somewhere between $30 and $40 for the parts for this.

I've had this mod installed on my car for over 2 weeks and it works great.

Great job. And if it helps the original fan jumper worked on a Magnum SRT-8 at the track as well as on jaak's SRT-8.

You probably don't have the Adobe Plug-in installed in your browser allowing you to view PDF's.

Open Adobe Reader.

Goto Edit - Preferences - Internet

Make sure that the check box that says "Display PDF in browser" is checked. If not, check it. If checked, uncheck, save, recheck, save. You should be in business.

I'd love a variation where I could switch between fan speeds Low/Low, High/High, and mod off. I plan on using another switch to impliment the toggle between mod powered when engine is on versus mod powered even when engine is off.

There are times I would like to cool down my car on high, turn the car off after a little while, flip two switches and continue to cool the car down on low for a minute or two.

Neat. 180 degree tstat here I come.

Options Options Options! What you say is Definitely doable! The more I think about this, the more options that I can dream up! Ideas from persons like yourself feed the fire too!

I am working on a "Simple" fan mod as I sense that some people are a little skiddish of this "Complex" mod.

Thanks Jim, yeah I know that one... I open pdfs all the time, as the datasheets for the products my employer makes are all pdfs, but for some reason that one didn't want to go. I have Acrobat installed, not the reader, so there may have been something funky there.

Sorry to disagree, not trying to be contrary:

I have had a *lot* of 'experience' beating Adobe PDF programs into submission especially Acrobat and Reader.

I've found opening PDF files into the browser window to be *very* cumbersome, slow, and unstable. I actually prefer that you try the exact opposite of what jim told you and make sure that "Display PDF in Browser" is not checked.

(Especially since you have Acrobat installed instead of reader). There is a similiar option in Acrobat. This way when you open PDFs they should load in another window.

However, at work almost everyone that has Acrobat has LOTS of problems opening new PDFs from the internet. (Version conflicts and for some reason Acrobat just stops opening them up from the browser properly)

I have found that the Reader software will easily coexit with Adobe Acrobat. I have had Acrobat 6 installed with Reader 7.0. I highly recommend that you also go and download the latest Adobe Reader, install it, and associate PDF files with it. (That should be taken care of by installing the Reader, but if it isn't then let me know and I'll tell you how to "force" it to open PDFs.

You can download the latest Adobe Reader from here. I selected the Windows XP/2K version WITHOUT the extra crap (Yahoo! Toolbar and photo album crap) If you need a different version, go here.

Please let me know if you continue to have trouble because there are a couple more steps you may have to perform to completely fix this. However this first shot needs to be done either way.

When you set Adobe Reader to handle PDF files, and you set it to not open in the browser window, PDFs tend to load a lot faster without hindering your browser at all. The PDF browser plugin is very bloated and slow.

Tech tip of the day: Get a free program to create PDFs from *anything* that you can print. Any printable media can be turned into a PDF quickly with PDFCreator (preferred) or PrimoPDF. Both are free. PDFCreator is open source and has some more useful features than PrimoPDF.

They both install a printer that you can select when you go to print something. The feature I use the most in PDFCreator is I print one PDF file and when it prompts me for a file name I click the "Waiting" button. Then I go print something completely different (as many other pages as I want) PDFCreator queues them all up. I highlight them all, right click, and choose Combine. This "smashes" or combines all the pages together into one multipage PDF file. It's really nifty to be able to create a PDF file from mutliple sources like that. That extra feature alone makes PDFCreator far superior imho.
