First time ever hitting the rev limiter, and I go into limp mode

So i have babied my car up till now, because it is my daily driver and I was always paranoid about messing it up. No burn outs, no nothin like that. So tonight, im feelin a bit feisty, turn off ESP, and put it in first gear. Go around a turn, and floor it. I guess it was a bit wet outside, so the tires slipped bad and i hit the rev limiter instantly and I hear a loud boom! Check engine light comes on, I cant accelerate, but I can hit the gas pedal and the RPMs just shoot up. I pull over, try to clear the code with my predator but it says no code? Odd.....anyway I restarted the car, and off I went.

Kind of disappointing that the very first time I try to cut loose and hit the rev limiter, it goes into limp mode. How are peopel doing burn outs and all that crazy stuff when my car is so sensitive?

you mean the shift points? those are stock. Never adjusted anything else with the revs if that is what you are tlakin about.....

I am scared to use my n2o with my spartan and having esp off, if the tires are going to cut loose and hit the rev limiter again, going into limp mode

Stop babying the thing already. These things were built to run. Go with raised shift points and set your rev limiter to 6350 and you'll be fine. I just went through this.

excuse the ignorance, but is raising the shift points to 6350 also raising the rev limiter?

If I do that will I no longer go into limp mode when i cut loose?

Rev limiter is when the engine pulls back throttle to prevent you from over-reving. Shift points are where the tranny will upshift at WOT.

Rev limiter should be just higher than shift points. Someone else around here can probably tell you how much higher.

What happened to you sounds like a similar experience I had. What I think happened was I pulled off the gas right at the instant the tranny tried to shift to 2nd while the tires were still spinning a little. Tranny made a loud thump and went into limp mode. Same story, pulled over, restarted, and everything fine.

Funny--same thing happen at the track last week. With dry tires on the prestage, did the usually burnout to clean off the tires and I bounced off the rev limiter. Not a good feeling...

shift points are where the car is set to auto shift
rev limiter is where the car is set to bounce back and stop feeding the engine to prevent damage.

you set your shift at 6000
    rev limiter at 6350

7000 is the magic number that the engine just plain doesnt want to see, and even with raised points etc, if the tranny gets 7k, its going to disengage and make you restart.

aside from that, go beat on teh car some, ****... i make sure to give my car a solid WOT thru the gears every day and find and empty parking lot to go thru (sideways!!!!!!!!!!!) every once in a while too

Oh ok, I just never saw the rev limiter option on the predator. What is the factor rev limiter set at now?

So if i put the shift points to 6k and the rev limiter to 6350 there will be no more limp mode? even if i cut loose?

So cam how did you figure this out, just trial and error? If my rps shoot up due to the tires spinning, does the tranny still shift at my shift point?

guess the only thing to do after this is try and bounce off that rev limiter to see if limp mode happens...

is that what the factory rev limiter is set at, 7000? Wierd they would set it to that and then have HAL go into limp mode if it actually sees it

I was having the exact same problem. And SuperT gave me a heads up, they had tried it on his car when he had the trackloser rearend. I never had this problem with my BnG PCM, only the Diablo. And I had a burnout comp I wanted to enter. But there was no way in hell I could have with the limp mode issue. So I lowered it to 6350 and have not had another problem since. BTW, I'm not sure if 6350 is the highest you can go, I haven't tried raising it yet.

Here, this is what it sounds like bouncing off the limiter:
