Changed my rear diff oil today.

I just got done changing out my rear diff oil. I used Mobil 1 synthetic 75w140. My Magnum only had 17,945 but according to the 2008 owner's manual you are supposed to check your diff oil at 18,000. I figured if I'm going to go through all the trouble of buying a 14mm hex bit, lift it and open up the fill plug I might as well take it one step further and just change out all the oil while I'm under there.

I didn't have any problem. Easy job. I drove the rear up on ramps and then put the front up an jack stands. I put a level under the car and it was perfect. I don't know how I did it. I guess I just lucked out.

I drained it and then I blew some compressed air in the fill hole. A lot more old oil came out the drain hole. I highly recommend this procedure with clean compressed air from an air compressor (canned air probably won't do anything). The old oil looked pretty good BTW. I guess 17,945 miles is probably too soon to change it but oh well.

I ended up using my oil transfer pump to get the fresh oil back in. I filled it until oil came back out and then quickly put the fill plug back in.

I didn't end up using any teflon tape as some have recommended. There wasn't any teflon tape on there from the factory so I figured it would be fine without it. No leaks so far. I tightened it to 37 ft/lbs.

When I first removed the fill plug it started dripping diff oil pretty good. I don't know how they fill it at the factory but it seemed a little high.

While I was under the car I sprayed my bushings with silicone as well as the front rack boots and the rear CV boots.

I took the car out on the road and I swear it's got more power. I'm chirping 2nd in 81 degree weather and I'm lighting up the rear tires like crazy.

    Rear Diff Additive

Do you need to add the Mopar Rear Differential Additive to the rear differential when changing the fluid?

For 2005-2008 LX, no, because they don't have LSD. 2009's with LSD need it.

I was just going to say that. I have LSD on my 2000 Durango and it needs the friction modifier additive.

I wonder if it's the same as what the 2009 LX's with LSD use?

What about if I'm installing a Quaife (LSD)?

Consult Quafire about this, the Quafire kit probably comes with a bottle.

That's cool. Thanks. At least my dealership is more likely to have it in stock.
