BOOM!! Lurch,Crunch..grindgrind. I broke it

The Hearse is down for the count for awhile.
Came to a stop. Light turns green. Step on the gas and I feel a VERY horrible crunching sound from my baby's internals. (sigh)
It's hard to relive the experience. Hope none of you have to go through it. My car is my only escape from reality sometimes.
I've really come to enjoy it, and now.. it's hurting.
And needs me.
Left work at 4pm. All is fine.
4:30pm The light turns green and w/ gentile pressure on the go pedal, the trans or transfer case dies. At 10mph I coast to the side of the road and put it in park.
It starts rolling.
It's still grinding.
WTF!
I turn it off and come to a stop. I started it back up and the motor sounds fine (good).
I put in it in Drive and the sound of ... well... sounds like a bad starter bendix-on-flywheel sound

Shut it off.
Call the Dealer.
Got it towed back and the Trans Man does a quick check.He thinks the transfer case gears have gone south.
It had the Shudder TSB done (by him) at 36k and it has 56k now.
So, of course, it's too late to get a loaner from the local rental place.
And, of course, they have no one to drive me anywhere.
So I hoof it to work, about 1/4 mile away, and call the Boss to borrow the company car to get home.
He says fine, no problem.
I get inside and find the Key Box is locked, and no key anywhere.
So I call the traffic dude and ask where he hid the keybox key.
CLASSIC- "It's in my pocket"...... uh.. ok.. great.
So I get to drive home an Isuzu LCF straight truck w/ a 20' bed.
I'm living the life now.
Did I forget to mention its beer-thirty?

I feel for ya. Almost exactly the same thing happened to me; hit the gas and dead car, only my problem was a bent pushrod. Hope you get it fixed.

Update: Got a call from the dealer. The transfer case gears are shot. It is gonna be covered by my extended warranty, and I get a loaner for 6 days max. They hope to have the TC in by Wednesday. I'll get the rent-a-wreck from Enterprise when I go into work Monday, and hope to get pics from the dealer as well. I don't yet know if it was caused by the Tech who rebuilt it when I had the shudder fixed. He did replace the input shaft.

Received a call from my dealer Thursday night. Said the Mag was ready to be picked up. Here is a pic of my loaner. Nice little underpowered car.



The Mechanic said that I had stripped all of the teeth off of the planetary gear in the transfer case. When they unbolted it a pile of powder came out of it. They got a complete, new, updated unit to put in it's place. They also said that this one was internally vented, not externally like the old one.
I took it for a test drive, and right away I noticed that the clunk in the rear end was gone.(well I thought it was coming from the rear end).
My $2000 repair job cost me a $50 deductible thanks to the extended warranty I have.
If any of you have strange noises coming from the underworld of your AWD, make sure
you have a ride home and a warranty, or a pocket full of greenbacks.
