    Is it a bird...Is it a bag...No...it's a freggin skunk!

Well...On my way home from work a couple of nights ago on a dark 2 lane highway, I spotted something on the road about 100 feet away which looked like a bag blowing in the wind. But when I got closer, I saw that it was the biggest skunk I had ever seen running on the highway. I only had 2 seconds to make a decision, try to avoid it by going in the opposite side of the Highway (Umm no), press on the brakes and hope there's no one who was going to hit me in the ass since we were going over 100 (didn't even have time to look in my rearview mirror to see if the guy behind me was too close...so that wasn't an option), or just try to veer a bit and try to see if I can miss running over the skunk with my 22s. Well that's the option I picked. The skunk went right under my car and when I passed it, I look in the rearview mirror and saw that the skunk was ok and running off the highway...good thing my car isn't lowered yet. Yay for the skunk and yay for the car not being damaged right? Wrong! The f'n skunk sprayed the bottom of the car when I went over it. It smelled so bad it made me gag. The smell is just inside the car and I don't know what to do. I tried washing it and everythign but it still smeels bad. Any suggestions anyone?

That was actually the next step...empty out an windex bottle and fill it out with tomato juice and spray the whole bottom.

I'm amazed you were able to get the thing to pass under you without damage to it or you. I have trouble picturing there being enough clearance for it not to hit though. I swear i have not been able to drive over a damn soda can in the road without hitting it and i am stock height. If you have a weed sprayer (one of those pump tanks with a wand) you can use that to get farther under your car and spray the living hell out of it. After it's good and soaked with your favorite stench absorbing liquid, take a trip to the car wash for the under carriage spray a couple times. then baking soda boxes in the car for a couple weeks to make a dent at the cabin smell. You have a long smelly road ahead of you in cleaning this.

I assume you run an SRT, your suspension is lower than other LX.

But then again I didn't read, I guess the op could have an SRT lol

he has an RT but it still just doesn't process right in my head. I though we were only a couple inches different in height which would still destroy even a medium sized skunk. A large skunk would take the lower facia right off.

There is no quick fix for the smell, Tomato juice works for people but I don't know about cars. Besides it takes a LOT of juice. The smell lingers forever! I would concentrate on odor neutralizers inside the car but the smell from outside will continue for a while. GOOD LUCK!

Uh.... none of you have heard the hydrogen peroxide + baking soda + detergent solution?

Don't use tomato... mixing 1 bottle of hydrogen peroxide from the drugstore with a quarter cup of baking soda and a healthy dollop of detergent will actually break down the chemicals in the skunk smell that stinks. And it's sprayable!

My dog got a hold of a skunk when I was younger and we scrubbed him in that combo... worked pretty well.

same exact thing happened to me in my mustang except with a racoon, went roaring right over him and the poor thing was disabled sitting dead in the middle of the lane...thought it was a bag, must have given him a heart attack when I went over him...

as suggested undercarraige wash, multiple times the baking soda/hydrogen peroxide sounds good and you can try to use simple green as well that stuff will take anything off .... if your going to get under there use a fan to direct fumes away from you or a gas mask...let interior air out....pine tree air freshener inside should take care of remaining effects

    ugh... yuck..

I can't even imagine.. I ran over a opossum awhile back and half his carcass got melted to my cats and exhaust pipes and the burnt road kill smell stunk for 2 weeks, every time the car got up to operating temp you could smell the BBQ under the car..

I can't even imagine what skunk would do to the car..

    yuck

oh yeah, and for the interior smell, get a couple of bars of Irsih Spring soap, cut them in strips and put them in plastic sandwich boxes under the seats, then put the floor heater on high while you drive for awhile blowing across the soap.. , that will clear out the smell inside the car..
