    Angry Ban the gravel trucks!!

Finally got the windsheild of my 05 Magnum R/T shattered by a stray rock from a gravel truck. I have lots of heavy pits in the windheild and paint, even on the sides of the car from the trucks on the California freeways. The Magnum windheild has held up very well to some previous strikes, it's kinda funny when you see the object coming and try and duck it!! This one hit hard, a very loud POP just as I was about to change lanes after entering the freeway.
$250 deductable on insurance, bummer, I have insisted on Factory glass replacement only, as there are inferior aftermarket replacements out there.
Anyone had a windsheild replaced yet?? Any complications to look for??

We have gravel trucks here in Ohio that have stickers on the back absolving them of any responsibility from broken windshields. Amazing.

Now I understand that gravel and debris can fall off of trucks but when I see one on the freeway that was obviously a lack of cleaning the excess material that was left on the back bumper off I don't get it. I had a similiar situation happen this week on the freeway where a landscapers truck had debris on the back bumper/skid. They did not clean it off and they were littering both lanes of a 65mph section of freeway with rocks and dirt. Not gravel, rocks. I managed to dodge most of it and get by him unscathed. No name on the truck or I would have called the company.

I saw one the other day that said to stay 200 feet behind it or they weren't responsible. I think I had to get within 50 feet to read the d*mn sign...

This thread scares me. I just came back to work from lunch driving the Ford seeing the pits in the windshield and I was wondering how long the Magnum would hold up. I think I may have jinxed myself. I've lived in Arkansas for four years and have replaced one on my old Elantra, one on my old Ranger and two on my old 626. I'm hoping to get a discount on "frequent flyer miles". It's not even the gravel trucks that is the only problem. They use pea stone to "sand" the roads in winter here. 1/2 inch of snow will shut er' down.

The Magnum has a soul. It has a personality, something all too lacking in the automotive transportation appliances everybody else is offering.

My friend, who is an attorney, told me that those stickers don't absolve the trucks of anything. All they do is scare off people with legitimate claims.
If you get hit by a flying object from a truck, make sure you get the company's name, the truck's license # or company vehicle #, note the time of day, and then contact the company telling them that their truck is responsible for breaking your windshield, etc, & you're going to take them to small claims court if they don't reimburse you for the damage. Most company's of this type carry insurance for this type of claim...

I live off around the corner from a road called "Gravel Pike" so I am well aware of the dangers. Though I have not experienced the issue at hand, I fear it.

Dump trucks losing rocks/gravel out of the top of their hopper, low-boys carrying mud-dripping bulldozers, log trucks dropping large twigs & chunks of bark: I hate them all!

I have 7 little dings, some w/ a similar diameter as a pencil eraser, on my A-pillars, hood and front grill from such debris. If I complained each and every time it happened and made the companies fix the damage, my car would spend 2 weeks out of each month in the shop.

8R that sucks!! Had it happen in my '80 Chrysler Newport shattered the window, the rock was sitting on the passenger floor thing was friekin huge. Did like the others said, called the company and had em re-imburse me.

The only thing I could think of to 'watch out for' would be wind noise from the window not being sealed when its replaced. But I don't think you need to worry about that unless you take it a mom & pop shop.

If it's possible, I believe the glass to be a bit on the thin side. I have NEVER had to replace a windshield due to a crack, but I've got two in my 300C. Small ones, from small rocks, but the glass cracked nonetheless.

I wonder if it's the shape and not the thickness of the glass??

If you can solve your problem, then what is the need of worrying? If you cannot solve it, then what is the use of worrying?

I had mine rocked in Brampton a few months ago and went with the aftermarket glass. It still took two weeks to get the glass and it has dark tint at the top. I don't have reservations with the aftermarket stuff as I expect to go through one every two years with my 35,000 miles per year use. Even if it is not broke by a rock it is so sandblasted after that from winter use that you can't see if you are going into the sun. The nose will get repainted or replaced each two years too. Knowing this ahead of time makes it a bit less painful to watch the quick deterioration of the front facing surfaces. I will get SXT headlight when the first nose rebuild gets done!!

It's not only the big trucks that scare me, it's the semi's with no trailer (cab only). Had the car two weeks when driving at night, on the highway, a truck getting on the highway and alittle ahead of me in the right lane merging over kicked up a stone and it hit the roof. It was dark and I never saw it but I heard it. Have a small ding in the roof but at least it missed the sunroof.
