Question Ash Tray/Coin Holder Problem AARRRG.....

Ash tray/coin holder (what ever you want to call it, and I'll be dammed if anyone smokes in my Charger), the problem is when I open it, it take about 15 tries to get it closed. Sometimes I just give up for a few minutes and try again, VERY IRRITATING, I don't even want to open it anymore. I'm sure this is a design flaw. Has anyone had this problem and fixed it? I just went in for my one year check up and forgot to tell the dealer about this. Do I need to take it back or is there a simple fix? Help will be appreciated. Thanks

Sounds like something in the back might be stopping it from catching have you tried pulling it out and checking?

Known problem. TSB 23-006-05. If you're under warranty, take it in and let them look at it. If they tell you nothing is wrong, show them this.

If you're not under warranty, mine seems to close better if I push on the top left corner as opposed to anywhere else - or never open it again.

No problems with mine, but then, I never use it and it stays shut.

I just replaced mine yesterday after the old one wouldn't close. The new one must be designed differently because it feels like it's opening and closing differently than before. Smoooooth...

    Works better than ever!

If the ashtray is like a Magnums, you can remove it (open and pull from the top edge and the panel it's in will come free from clips at the top, then pull it free from the bottom clips). Look at the back of the ashtray in the center and you wll see a pivot point for a small lever. Look under the tray and you will see the lever as it follows a little track in the plastic. Mine looked like it had some dirt on the flat surface that the lever rides on. I cleaned that area and applied some light grease in the track. Works fine now. It's a few minute fix. Not really impressed with the whole assembly but it does work.

You're not alone with this, mine sucks too. I'm going to rip the whole thing out and put an oil pressure guage and voltmeter in there instead!

Ours didn't work from the start. Could try many times and no go when we would get back in we would try again and it would work. Dealer replaced although we had just got it.

    Thumbs up Thanks

Thanks for the info. I think I'll take it back to the dealer. If this problem is common, they must have come up with a fix. Thanks again.

Yep. Very common problem. The TSB clearly states that there may be a wire harness that interferes with the operation or a bad catch. The normal course is to replace it. My MSRT had the same issue. The new one they installed is definitely different. You can feel an actual "CLICK" when you latch it.
