    Advice: dealer installed remote starter?

I have an MSRT on order (sitting in F status right now), and want a remote starter for it. I contacted the dealer to ask how much it'd cost to have them install one.

They quoted me $489 for the "Factory system" and also remarked that it'd be covered under the warranty. This would be the 1-way mopar remote starter system.

That price seems a bit high to me, but I don't have any experience with remote starters at all; just a gut feeling.

So I guess I have a few questions.
    1. Is this a fair price?

    2. How hard is it to install the mopar remote starter myself? I wouldn't call myself a car repair expert or anything, but I can do my own regular maintenance, replace hoses, accessories, and stuff like that. And I can follow directions.

    3. Even if the price is a bit high, is it worth paying just for the warranty support?

Thanks in advance for any help you might have.

Most of the install is plug n play. If I remember 2 - 3 wires to solder. Got mine off ebay for $125 and have no problems. If I had to do over, I would still do it myself. It takes a little time, which is why the dealer wants so much but is very doable yourself.

Did you use the mopar one or a 3rd party starter? I think I read that some of the 3rd party ones can cause problems because of the sentry keys.

It's not too bad to install it yourself. Technically it's a breeze... it's just some of the places you have to reach and pull wires are a little tricky to get to. I definitely advise NOT paying them to do it. 1 year isn't enough warranty to really matter. Check w/ the supporting vendors, the kits are really reasonable. I also recommend getting the 2-way/extended range kit... worth the extra $80 IMHO.

The complete kit goes for about $300 list from your dealers parts dept (it's a dealer installed option) plus the extra for install labor... so $489 is about right.

You can buy the factory kit on ebay for under $250 and install it yourself and save (it's easy to install...plus we'll help ya), but it won't be covered under the 3/36 warranty.

The one I installed on my '05 Mag was good, but my '06 had a bad remote start wiring harness that I had to buy myself because I installed it and it wasn't covered...

Let the dealer do it. The price is right and it's covered under my extended 5yr, 100,000 warranty. See Red below!

A friend mentioned one other pitfall of self-installation. Suppose I do have an electrical problem down the line that should be covered under the warranty.

How easy is it going to be for a dealer to say "Oh, you installed the starter yourself? Well you screwed it all up. we're not covering it."

You could always upgrade to the 2-way Mopar once you have this one installed.. I think it was something like 80 bucks Canadian...

I have that upgrade to my stock remote start.. range is alot better.. and provides feedback that the car started....

although it's an easy install, if you're worried about warranty coverage, it may ease your mind to have them install it. also, if you're planning on purchasing a chrysler extended warranty/service contract, any mopar accessories installed before delivery should be covered for the duration of the contract. see your dealer for details.

daoist... what you say is correct. If the dealer installs it, it's covered (any problems or even things like the remotes).

My install on the '06 went great but the battery kept dying. After the original outlay of about $250, I now had to fix it myself...I bought another control module...that didn't fix it. Then bought a SCREEM module...nope that didn't do it either...Bought the harness...yep that's what was wrong.. so I paid over twice the price of the kit.

I'd do it myself again... I don't trust just anyone with my car.

So you make the decision... They're easy to install yourself, but you can get in trouble if something is defective...

    Flip a coin...lol
