    2 Keys??

Has anyone ever bought a car that only came with one set of keys? Much to my surprise that was the case today. After all the deals were made and the papers were signed it was time for the changing of the keys. He handed me ONE key! I asked him where the other one was. He said that's what happens when you get used cars. I was never told that the car only had one key. I assumed that the car came with 2 keys, so I never even bothered to ask if there were two. Was I wrong?

This is a Chevrolet dealer, not a Dodge dealer.

If this was just a regular key I'd just go make a copy. But according to the manual I need a PIN number just to get a copy. Obviously I don't have the PIN number. Does that mean I will have to get 2 new keys and have them programmed?

Does anyone have any suggestions on what kind of action I can take?

Hi there; I also bought a used Dodge, it came with 2 keys with remotes, however the second key is not cut deep enough as the first, so it opens the door and the panic goes off, it starts the car and then quits in 3 seconds. I have heard from a friend that you must go to the dealer to get a key, and that it costs around 100. so I hear, sorry have not heard of any lower price, Mag05

when i bought my preowned magnum, i got 2 keys, a FOB key and a nonFOB key (no buttons on it)...looks like a regular Dodge/Chrysler key from a few years ago. it works fine, and is a cheaper alternative to buying a new FOB key.

I also only got 1 key from the dealer. I purchased one from here, had it cut and programed at the dealer for $34.50

No buttons, but unlocks the doors and starts the car.
This key will set off the alarm, but saves you a tow bill if you lose the expensive one.

Mag05 - Your 2nd key is a door only key. It's not for starting the car. Our company car came new w/ it. You can also get a Valet key which will open the doors, start the car, but not be able to unlock the glovebox, console, or trunk.

I never heard of a "door only" key other than a blank w/o transponder. If Mag05 has 2 keys with fobs but one turns but alarms then that key has been cut but it has not been programmed.

Do you think the dealer that I bought it from would cover it if I told them that my insurance won't cover me because of the other key that's out there? I mean, all the previous owner has to do is call the DMV, give them the plate number and they can give out the address as to where it's registered since it is a public record.

Not here did it matter. I had the previous owners information still in the Nav unit (He lives near me, has a pilots license and smokes cigars, among other things) and they didn't care. Your dealer might be different than mine.

(I didn't catch the part about the alarm going off, our 2nd key only does the doors/trunk. Kinda like a kids key to get stuff outa the car without being able to go anywhere.)

I think you got what I was trying to say backwards. I'm not talking about ME having the PREVIOUS owners information. (Thats up to him to delete everything)

Since the car originally came with only 2 keys that will work in the car, it could be a liability issue. All the previous owner would have to do is find out where the car is and he could drive it off since he had the "other" key.

I too, bought a use mag with one key. The dealership wanted almost $200 for the FOB key and programming. I went to another dealership and they told me about the "valet" keys, so I bought two, $5 each! They only open the doors, period, will NOT start the car. But if I lock my keys in there, it's all good!

Hmm I got two of the same keys with my 07'. So let's say I have a Viper key cut the same as the one for the Magnum, it won't work? When I was told about this when my parents got their 05' Caravan I never really believed Dodge would put a sensor in the key to start the car but I guess it's true then, always thought that was a Lexus/BMW/Mercedes thing.

If you lock the car with the keyfob button, and then insert the key to unlock it, the alarm will sound regardless of which key you unlock it with.

If you can solve your problem, then what is the need of worrying? If you cannot solve it, then what is the use of worrying?
