*shakes fist* CEL three days after 170° t-stat install...

I'm not too concerned, but it still sucks. My dash has always stayed clear of these things. Is there a way I can check the code in the EVIC? I forget...

Yes there is, I think it is turn ign key on/off 3 times fast in 10 seconds.

Or just pull fuse #11 to clear it.

It's probably a little cool this time of year for a 170* T-Stat in Minnesota

I alwayas got the CEL with the 170* tstat...I've been told on here to go with the 180* to avoid the CEL from coming on.
    Take care,
    Christopher

Hmm, well a lot of people I asked said they didn't have issues in the colder climate. I'll try to clear it. If it keeps coming back, I may get a 180. Having driven the car for a few days, it is definitely snappier, even with the colder weather, I don't remember it responding like it does now. It feels and sounds really good now. I think the SC Tuner is my next performance upgrade...

I went with a 180* and have never gotten a CEL. Usual running temperature is between 179 and 181.

If in traffic and with the fan mod enabled I'll still see 217+, but click on the fans and watch the temps drop.

I put in a 180 and still get a few CEL's now and then, even in Florida.

Of course it is my fault, as I drilled 2 small holes in the thermostat to help prevent air blockage when refilling the radiator.

Am going to plug the 2 holes (1/8 inch) with pop rivets as soon as the weather cools off here in Florida.

YES, it is still hot down here - cools off in mid-October.

I have had the 170 in Mn all summer and unless you only drive in town you're going to get a CEL. I drive 26 mi. to work every day (highway) and sometimes it takes a couple of days but it will always come back. I'll be switching back to stock next month for the winter.

It just can't warm up enough.

I know that last night driving for about 15 minutes my car could not warm up to 200 (stock thermo... I KNOW better than to swap mine out) so I can't imagine your engine is warming up well. My car warms up fast, but I seem to recall the 5.7's warming up a bit slower.

For winter I would suggest you go back to stock, you'll barely hit 200 for most of the time you drive over the next 7 months.

180 tstat in cool weather (60 degrees here has been the coolest I've driven in recently) my car gets up to 183 just fine with the Stant. The Stant seems to let the car go higher than the 170 degree tstat did which is probably to be expected. I'll eventually get the Robert Shaw 180 degree because I really like that style/brand/type of tstat.

Well... DAMMIT, I asked about using the 170° t-stat before buying it and everyone who used it in winter "up north" said "no problems". I got the Robert Shaw and my engine has not risen above 180° since. Realistically, am I looking at any short-term or long-term damage? Other than the CEL, what can go wrong?
