Does anybody remember the reason given for the establishment of the DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY..... during the Carter Administration?
Anybody?
Anything?
No?
Didn't think so!
Bottom line: We've spent several hundred billion dollars in support of an agency...the reason for which very few people who read this can remember!
Ready?? It was very simple . . . and, at the time, everybody thought it very appropriate.
The Department of Energy was instituted on 8/04/1977 TO LESSEN OUR DEPENDENCE ON FOREIGN OIL.
Hey, pretty efficient, huh???
AND, NOW, IT'S 2012 -- ALMOST 35 YEARS LATER -- AND THEBUDGET FOR THIS "NECESSARY" DEPARTMENT IS AT MORE THAN $29.5 BILLION A YEAR. IT HAS 16,000 FEDERAL EMPLOYEES AND APPROXIMATELY 100,000 CONTRACT EMPLOYEES, AND LOOK AT THE JOB IT HAS DONE! THIS IS WHERE YOU SLAP YOUR FOREHEAD AND SAY, "WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?"
A little over 33 years ago, 30% of our oil consumption was foreign imports. Today 70% of our oil consumption is foreign imports.
Ah, yes -- the good old Federal bureaucracy !!!
NOW, WE HAVE TURNED THE BANKING SYSTEM, HEALTH CARE, AND THE AUTO INDUSTRY OVER TO THE SAME GOVERNMENT ???
Hello !!! Anybody Home ???
But hey the new Dodge Dart made it on to the DOE home page...

And yet we have "soccer moms" in Atlanta GA. driving 12 MPG 4WD SUVs.
And then there are the guys on Dodge talk driving their Ram P/Us 140 miles ea way to work out in Kaliforneyeay bitchin about the price of gas.
And we have the cheapest gas on the planet aside from the Arab countries.
But none of those factors have anything to do W/our dependance on foriegn oil right?
It's all the Gubmints fault.![]()
I was thinking about going cat less on my supercharged 300 I have hiflows in there now with long tubes is it worth it at all? Any real gains

I cant say the Hemi does the same but my former SRT10 gained 2 HP by going from high flow cats to catless....the tuner told me that going catless vs high flow cats is not worth the smell....and other tuners told me the same.....of course I have no proof to satisfy some here so I will say this is an IMO....LOL........

Well said...
Believe those who seek the truth; doubt those who believe they've found it.
I find it hard to dismiss global warming as conjecture. The simple fact is eons of carbon based fossil fuels have been stored far below the earth surface. For a millenia if not the past few centuries mankind has released this stored engergy into the atmosphere. As of the last century we've had the technical capability to monitory and compare data...imigary of polar ice caps shrink isn't in doubt...what's causing it is.
The basic engineering/chemist understanding of the principals at play here are thermodynamics. We live in a closed system/environment, the simple and plain fact is we're releasing massive amounts of greenhouse gasses into the air (CO2). Your basic college level chemistry will tell you the closed system should experience a rise in tempatrure.
Now I'm not smart enough on the topic to have a professional opinion, but history has shown us time and time again the current popular views without factual basis are replaced over time with scientific data. All you have to do is go back and look at the many example of blind belief: Galileo Galilei claim against the popular belief the earth was the center of the solar system, christopher columbus challenge that the earth was not flat and too many others to mention, but you get my point.
There are many things in life you shouldn't do, I drink like a fish on social occasions, enjoy a cigar time from time and a little overweight. But I'm not ignorate to the fact these things are detrimental to my health and this really only impacts me--not those around me. In the same sense one shouldn't be so quick to dismiss the cause of global warming as just a simple trend.
Now back to the OP's question, I do believe it's a bit self-centered and irresponsible to just remove the cats. California does have smog problems in its major cities due to population densities. I have to admit I like breathing clean air and would frown upon those who recklessly pollute for any reason from any source.
If the moral debate isnt worth your consideration perhaps the legal one is: Does law enforcement inspect your car in a vehicle stop such as CHP in our state? Is it worth the fine for a few more ponies under the hood?
Just my 0.02...

all i can say is wow ha ha i came on here to figer out if i wanna go cat less and i fell like i wasted 20 min of my time reading a cnn news website of tree hugers vs polluters ha .. dum well off to another thread so try to get info ha ha ... i feel sorry for the guy that posted this .
I've had an endless parade of engine light issues since last August, (2005 Magnum R/T), with the car being flooded last Fall, then a broken valve spring, now the code is 'inefficient catalytic converter'. I was told that if this code comes up before the car hits 8 years or 80K miles, Dodge covers replacement costs - unfortunately for me, the delivery date was August '04, so I'm too late to get new cats through whatever coverage might have been available through Dodge. Anyhow, my question is, if the cats are removed how do you avoid an engine light code coming up, and if the engine light can be bypassed (code for bad cats), could that be accomplished leaving the same old cats in there. In days of old, when I was driving a 1975 New Yorker, a bad cat was remedied by way of smashing the innards out of it with a metal rod, and reinstalling the hollowed out cat so it would look ok to the inspection station guys. Somehow, it kept passing emissions anyway.
Barring a simple cheap remedy like that, any tips on a source for cheap replacement cats? I haven't eyeballed it myself yet, but I've been told the recirculator tube is also kaput on one of the cats. I'm really itchy to be able to drive the Magnum again for more than 3 days without an engine light code coming up on me. It's been a long time.
Also, fyi, as far as the pollution issues, I've read that owning a small dog results in the same 'carbon footprint' as owning & driving an average SUV daily, owning a larger breed like a retriever or German Shepherd is the equivalent of owning & driving an Escalade 5 miles per day.
I have to say, these conepts all share something in common. Have a look into the studies which show ice cap shrinkage on other planets within our "closed system".
The Earth has shown that warming and cooling trends have occurred throughout it's existence. Now, do we as inhabitants play catalyst (for lack of a better word) to these trends? -Quite possibly, but so do trees, animals and extra-terrestrial factors; the lot of which are completely out of our control.
So are we treating symptoms of this present trend? -I tend to believe so. The very principle of evolution would also suggest this to be accurate.
But back to the discussion... The real matter here is "How much is too much?". And for that subjective question you'll never have a clear cut answer. I might have a bone to pick with v12s in general, and given enough money and lobbying power my viewpoint could have the legs to carry engines in excess of my preference right off this planet. -Piss people off? You betcha. -Please those with narrowed views on the aggregate issue? Oh for sure!
I don't have a conclusionary statement to add (and it really wouldn't matter anyhow) but I choose to live and let live. We ingest tons of toxins in many-a form through every permeable membrane in our bodies; catalytic converters are a drop in the bucket.
