Well I just had a custom exhaust done on my stock 05 Mag R/T. What the muffler shop talked me into doing is basically a full Magnaflow catback without the resonators. So the stock suitcase was replaced with Magnaflow mufflers and all the piping behind the cats was upgraded to a larger diameter. There are no resonators, just some nice 4" double wall slanted tips.
I think the setup sounds PERFECT except for this pretty loud drone right at 2000 RPM. It is loud enough to make the interior rattle. This sucks because for normal acceleration, I stay on 2000 RPM until I hit my cruising speed. Overall it is not too loud and has the perfect deep tone.
Now what can I do to reduce this 2000 RPM drone but not make my exhaust too quiet otherwise AND without changing the tone? I'm not worried about completely eliminating the drone, just reducing it. I've heard of people putting a cheap glasspack about where the stock resonators were, but what other effects would this have? I don't want to change the tone a noticeable amount and I don't want it to be much quieter outside of the steady 2k RPM drone.
EDIT:
I'm also considering sound deadening as an option. Specifically this sludge that can be applied as an undercoating: http://www.secondskinaudio.com/sound...rum-sludge.php

You need to add 2 small resonators.........................

Have owned my share of 12 & 13 second cars, am happy now with my stock RT.
I also have the Magnaflow exhaust w/o the resinators! Drone is bad at 2000rpm. I purchased small, 14" resinators a few months ago. Really didn't help reducing the drone noise! I deleted MDS with my Preditor Tuner and that helped with the terrible drone when it went to 4 cyl mode! But I still have it at 2000rpm. I plan on replacing my exhaust with Magnaflow cat back with resinators soon. I don't like the drone at all.
I'm surprised someone on this forum has not figured out how to get rid of the drone problem. What is causing it anyway? Is it the plastic bumpers? Of all the muscle cars I have had in my life, this is the only car that has a drone problem.
Should have got a Corsa.
Lots of FL people here, huh??
I looked at many exhausts and couldn't justify spending $1200 on a Corsa or Zoomers versus 500 or so on a magnaflow catback. I haven't had a chance to check MDS yet as this is just around-town acceleration. But MDS is enabled and I will test it this afternoon.
For those that say "get a resonator", can you recommend one? I've never seen name brand resonators sold individually. Just random glasspacks which I've never thought of as resonators. Maybe I'm wrong, I'm not an exhaust pro. But with the resonator would I lose much volume at idle, 1500 RPM cruising, WOT, etc?
I have the magnaflow full catback system with mopar lt's and mids. I only have drone in mds and it is so minimal that I don't turn mds off. Just enough drone to know I went to 4 cyl. It does sound better as the system gets burned in a little too.
I also put this product in the spare tire area. http://shop3.mailordercentral.com/su...r=09-42725-PSA . It helped some with road noise and drone, but not enough to justify buying and installing IMO. Another product may work better than this option. This foam did not add weight to car like some of the other materials and i thought it was worth a try.

I have the full Magnaflow catback exhaust complimented with some high flow cats and I don't find the drone too bad at highway cruising when the MDS goes into 4-cylinder mode. I sometimes use the Diablosport to disable the MDS and mannnnnn the sound of all 8 cylinders all the time is music to my ears....NO DRONE! Try buying a Predator....There will be no more complaints about drone once you disable MDS.
It the MDS your hearing...that's the drone...it's gotta be.

It is definately the MDS. I disabled MDS when I had the same setup you did, except 40 Series, and it got better. I still did not like how loud it was, and now I am back to the stock Daytona exhaust. I love it, loud when you get on it, but silent when cruising. Best of all, NO DRONE PERIOD. I don't know why I changed in the first place. If I were you, I would try getting a stock Daytona or SRT exhaust system for cheap.
It is loudest when I'm accelerating around town at 2000-2200 RPMs. It is just too loud at this point. I just did some highway driving and the drone is not too bad with or without MDS, but I wouldn't mind it being a tad quieter.
I think you Magnaflow catback guys have that last set of resonators which I don't have. I have the midway mufflers, big pipes, and big tips. Right now I think I need a pair of resonators or glasspacks to add that will reduce the 2000-2200 RPM acceleration drone and still allow the V8 to be heard. Part of the reason I'm spending money on the exhaust is to have that impressive growl at startup, the noticeable idle, and the meaty roar when I punch it.
trust me.....as the system seasons with a few miles, it will get better...... although, turning off the mds will be an immediate help!!
Glass packs will help your situation out!!!!
I have to say it........................ FLOWMASTERS...................... LOL
Bob :-)
