Stroker specs. i.e bore, stroke, etc

I'm in the planning stages of my stroker build and have a few questions. I have decided it will be a 392 stroker. Just not sure which one. 6.1 or 5.7 based. 6.1 would ease my mind due to the fact they have forged rods and crank, which the 5.7 doesn't have. I know there haven't been any issues that I know of concerning rods/crank, but I might feel a bit more at ease. What I need to know is the bore/stroke of each as I will be ordering my Wiseco forged pistons won at the LX Nationals. Thanks in advance.

The crank and rods are replaced with forged parts when you do a stroker anyway - so what the 5.7 has now doesn't matter. The crank is actually what turns the motor into a stroker......

Understood about the crank, but the bore is sometimes different, no?

I was under the impression the stock 6.1 rods were of the powered metal type, needed replacing when doing a stout build?
Good luck on the build Gary, Your off to a good start!

Thanks Bill. It will be a winter build so next spring will be interesting.

Hey Gary, congrats again on winning the pistons. I agree with Erik in that it is ultimately cheaper to just build the 5.7 block out. Hell, if you wanted to go really cheap and stay in the 5.7 class you could just put the forged pistons in with a good set of rod bolts (arp 2000 /viper bolts), rebalance the assembly and run the hell out of it.

Also, mopar offers a forged crank for the 5.7 that runs about 500.00 or so but at that point you might as well do a stroker anyways. Here are a couple typical combos I was looking at last year when I deciding for myself which direction to take.

Typical 5.7 stroker, cubes can vary with slight differences in bore job and amount of stroke:

    bore x stroke
    3.93 x 4.050/4.080 = 392 +/-

Eventually if you wanted to move up to the 6.1 block and grow more cubic inches the same stroker crank and rods could be used in conjunction with a 6.1 piston/block to build a 426 down the road:

    6.1:
    bore x stroke
    4.055 x 3.92 = 392
    4.055 x 4.050/4.080 = 426+/-

Actual CI will vary a bit depending on whether you bore it out. Hope that helps a bit. Have fun deciding.

Just remember the 6.1 block will add considerable cost to the build.

    6.1's don't have forged rods . . . . .don't ask how I know

I agree with the above, save some coin and stay with the 5.7 block. You'll need the extra cash for the roll cage.

Thanks Chris. Congrats to you also. You keep raising the bar. This is the exact info I was looking for. I'm still going to pick Eriks brain with questions. There is alot more to this decision then anticipated. Thanks again guys.

What's this Gary, stroker? Oh it is gonna be fun! Do you plan on spraying it? Keep that in mind when doing the build if that is part of the goal. You will want different parts to get the most out of your intended goal.

you can go with a 4" bore on a 5.7 block

this can give you a 410ci with 4" bore 4.080" stroke. making it closer to square to have more of a 426 like power band.

but like eric said the cost of the 6.1 block will really add to the build $. i'd rather put that into 6.1 heads/manifold more than the 6.1 block itself.

anyway you can do a lot of things with the 5.7 block.

    3.94" bore x 3.795 stroke = 370
    3.94" bore x 4.080 stroke = 397

if your gonna run a large shot of nitrous i would go with the 397. if your going for all out NA power the 410 with a 6.1 top end would be awesome. at least i hope thats what im putting in my car lol.
