    Rust on stainless tips

I did the resonator deletion and have stainless steel pipes and tips. After one winter in Northern NY I noticed a bunch of small rust spots. Tried cleaning them, most of the rust wipes off, but there are little pitting spots left behind. Is there anyway to fix this or are they ruined? Is this normal for stainless steel? I thought they are suppossed to be rust proof? Any help would be appreciated.

BS, stainless steel WILL rust, all it is is a carbon alloy with nickle and other stuff added to make it rust resistant.

Your tips if pitted are not repairable unless you butter the pits with stainless wire, grind smooth and repolish

My favorite: your facts are flawed and experience sucks.....as does your attitude.

304SS won't rust for years unless you scratch it and then let it sit in low pH solution... I guess if you didn't keep 'er clean over the winter, maybe you're a little rusty. You can pull a stock exhaust off an 80,000 mile Ram and it'll look brand new, no rust... there's a difference between stainless steel and a stainless coating...

java's right about repairing them though, if they're solid stainless then you gotta basically grind/sand 'em smooth and repolish.

you could try comet....it's a mildly abrasive cleaner. That might work without cutting into them too hard.

    You Guys are INSANE!!!

    Mothers Polish is the answer.

Mothers polish will remove the rust spots and restore your tips to like new condition. You can get it at any auto parts store. Use it just like polishing compound on paint. Rub in circles, let dry wipe off in circles, repeat. I use it on all metal surfaces and it works miracles.

I use it on my exhaust tips whenever they get dirty or discolored.

I've had good luck with the Meguiars polish as well. I used it this past weekend and it did a really good job. The Winter was really hard on them this year.
