    Rear End Gears

Billapex and I were talking about this on my other thread..........Bill was saying that our rear end has a 2.8something gear.........do ya'll realize what a 3.55 gear would do to these cars? OMG!

Does anyone know if this is a Dodge rear or a Benz rear? If its a Dodge rear, we are in luck, but if its some kind of Benz rear, this might take awhile.

    It's a copy of a MB rear. It's not an 8 3/4 or Dana 60.

Just keep in mind that with the 5 speed auto trans, first gear is much lower than if you had a 727 3 speed auto.

Thanks for the info on past topics........"just when I thought I had read the WHOLE site."

I under stand first gear is low..........but would still be interested in 3.27 to 3.50 gears. Gas milage should not change all that much, but who needs to drive 155mph?

It looks like this mod will have to wait for Richmond to do something about it. I figure with the SRT and Charger coming out we will see some parts in the next couple of years.

Like with all things, there are PROs and CONs with being the first to own a new car with a new platform.

For what it's worth, I used an on-line speed calculator with the following assumptions:

    5800 rpm (redline)
    2.82 rear
    .83 transmission (5th gear OD)
726.7 tire revolutions per mile based on the stock RT tire/wheel combination

The estimated top speed was 204 MPH!!!

Now, given the reality of a top end more likely in the 150-160 range due to wind and other factors, MomsRT is right on with such a request. If we could substitute the 2.82 for the SXT offered 3.90, the top speed calculation drops to 148 mph, and I am sure there are some smart people who can calculate the 0-60 and quarter mile gains!

Put me down for such a mod!

weeb........ROFL.....yeah, you left out just a FEW factors in that such a drag co-eff. and hp levels.........but the point is well taken.

WHat needs to be figured is "cruising speeds" and keeping the rpm around 1600 - 2200 and make sure the MDS is not RPM sensitive. If the MDS kicks off at above 2400, then you would know that anything past 65 -70 mph (as an example only) would be your cut off speed for cruising thus your MAX gear allowable.

I figured something between the 3.27 to 3.55 would be perfect and even MORE so with the MDS and 5 gears.

It makes even more sence figuring the weight of the car.......all big cars need gears in ORDER to get the car moving, we all know it has the hp to continue to move.

The two (top speed and gears) go together, since the computer has to be re-programmed in both cases.

correct.......assuming that no one would change gears before they can reflash the computer (Hypertech) a person would assume that the top speed would / could be changed.

The larger issue here is "none of the above" if no one makes this gear.

    We need:

    1) Someone to manufacture the gear or for it to be offered in the SRT or alike. (Viper?)

    2) Hypertech to make a reprogrammer which would allow for firmer shifts, gear / tire changes, govern. lifted, and timing to be advanced.

Between the two, I'd like Hypertech to get there computer first before I even consider the gear. A gear without the computer will make your odometer roll over like a dog on speed!

The dealer can reprogram for a different rear end gear. In fact mine said they would do it for free anytime I made changes to the car (i.e. different tires, etc). It only takes a minute for them to change it.

FREE?!? Wow, that's superb! I doubt any of these jerk off dealers in VA would do that though...

I couldn't believe it either. This dealer is very open to modifications and improvements to the car. When I asked about voiding the warranty with my changes they just laughed and said the only thing that gets voided is for the part you replaced. For example the exhaust on my car is no longer covered because I have changed it out. Make sense to me. Why should they warranty the Aero Turbines??

So far I have been really pleased with my dealer. They were large enough to get the car fairly quickly (about 10 weeks) and small enough (only one person certified to work on 300's and Magnums) to still care about the customer.

You are VERY lucky. I went in last weekend to have my right pull fixed and they gave me the runaround about the TSB not applying to my build...

"How does that matter if my car is doing everything that is described in the TSB????"

Still fighting with them too! I could just imagine if I take it in for my next service and they open up my hood and see a cold air kit installed. They'd have a fit I'm sure!

Mine pulls too.......not alot, but it does.

As far as reflashing.....thats too cool. Problem still exists however......no gears of that I've heard thus far. I'll start to look around.

I remember years ago, when many were saying that was the first mod I needed to do on my old 72 Gran Torino Sport. (damn I miss that car) ANyways, I did what I was told to do and WOW, it was like I was spraying the car with a 100 shot of dope!

Big heavy cars love to get the ball rolling...........

I'll do the math later, but knowing the weight of the car, the hp, and rpm at cruising, I am still figuring 3.27 to 3.55..........anything around the 3.70 to 3.90 will raise the rpm about 1000 given the same speed. The 3.27 to 3.55 would raise the rpm 200 to 600 approx. with all things being equal.

Moms, put me down if you find 3.55's... collect names and approach the manufacturer... DEMAND or beg! Seriously, if there was enough interest, backed by $$, and it was mechanically possible...
