Oil pressure sensor

What does it actually do?

Just got 2 P0520 codes in the last 2 days. Just wondering if this is something that needs my immediate attention, or can I get to it within the week?

Oil level is good, it might be a half quart low according to the stick.

The light has only come on after the vehicle has sat for awhile, on first start up.

BTW what does the actual part look like, If anyone should have a photo.
