    Need CA emissions help

Sorry for the multiple postings. I'm just looking for information wherever I can get it.

    Hi everyone/anyone,

I'm throwing this out in the chances that someone has gone through CA emissions testing with engine / exhaust upgrades. Or knows something about it.
    My dilema -

I'm currently trying to decide on what upgrades I can make to my '05 Magnum and still be able to legally register/ smog certify my car in a couple of years.

Here's the list of components I'm considering. Any help is welcome help.

    PPP stage II heads
PPP stage II cam (wanted stage III cam. Don't think it'll pass emissions. Will stage II?
or what PPP cam can I use?)
    25% underdrive pulley
    JBA shorties
JBA mids w/ HF cats ( can I pass the inspection here?)
    Corsa cat back exhaust system.

    Thanks in advance!

    Bill

Since your JBA shorties/mids/cats will pass the visual, the only concern I can see would be choosing a cam that can be CMR tuned to make the OBDII system happy. The cat back & UD pulley will not affect emmissions.

If you have no codes, no problem.

If you go W/a cam that has a lot of duration or a narrow LSA it might be hard to get a tune that will not throw codes.

I am running PPP stage III heads and stage II cam with all the things you have listed aside from kooks instead of the jba's, only codes it threw was cat codes 420/430, turning those off in tune will not pass obd II readyness test but you could possibly play around with the anti foulers for that as well.

My high-flow cats threw codes after about 15mi so I had to turn off the rear O2 sensors. Some cars it works, some it doesn't it seems.

What ever you do externally, make sure the visual parts(if they are noticeable) are carb legal and have the sticker or documentation ready. Internally, I would think the cam would have to be at least mds friendly and the heads well they can't tell by looking that they have been worked, so that should'nt be a problem. That being said all smog shops out here are not created equal, some are more picky than others, D.

That's one strike against long tube's in my book - what you gain in power and coolness factor against easily pasing emissions. You cannot 'turn off' anything and pass - once it's goes 'Ready' (key on, no start, watch CEL for 30 seconds, if it doesn't blink 10 times, you are now 'Ready') you'll find two 'fails' against your O2's and that's an instafail.

JBA Shorties and JBA high-flow cats don't have any issues with emissions, as long as no one turned off the O2's in your tune. (Don't ask me how I know this).

Not sure how the 'Stage xx' cams compare to a Sidewinder, but mine has passed twice now, once with superchips and once with Diablo. Georgia emissions isn't anything different than Kahleefornia.

The high flow cats are not legal. I am pretty sure that it is a federal law prohibiting the replacement of a functioning cat. I have the magnaflows in my car and they have worked fine and have never thrown codes in almost 3 years, but that still doesn't make them legal.

You can replace your cats if they fail or if they have over 50K miles on them... but you must replace them with NEW cats, no buying a used OEM midpipe or used HFs...

Most shops wont give you crap...

I passed smog in CA with my lightning (stage IV cams, ported heads, had 2 of the 4 cats removed, and an EGR delete)... I got lucky that the guy didnt do the visual, but the sniffer passed just fine, no codes either...

I would imagine if you have all the CARB EO #s for the visible stuff, then a good CMR tune is all you need...

Since I'll be at SVS next Monday and we will have almost the same performance mods, I'll see if I can get a quick check on what my car would test at. I'll try to bring Cats, but it may take too long to compare with JBA hiflows vs. stock cats. I'll let you know.

Performance Mods: PPP stage III heads, Track Warrior Cam, Pedders XA Coilovers, Pedders Track II suspension, Razors Edge front, rear, underbody braces, Mopar CAI, BT Ported TB, JBA Headers/Mids, Corsa Exhaust, Diablo CMR tune, Quaife LSD, Brembo brakes, AMG Paddle Shifters
    Cosmetic Mods:
20" DVinci Vento wheels, full dark slate interior, embroidered katzkins/console cover, Ram Air Hood, Grip Rockers, Mopower front spoiler, BT knobs/sills/shift bezel, tags, & more
