How safe is nitrous on the 5.7 hemi

Ok guys I know this has been discussed on more than one occasion on these forums but I have to ask, Is nitrous to hard on the pistons on the hemi motor. I have heard the piston crown is very weak and nitrous would be to much for it to handle. I am not looking for more than a 50 to 75 shot. Looking at ZEX smart shot system. I am obviously looking for the safest way to go here so any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

As safe as it is on any other motor (not exactly foolproof). 75 is a fairly mild shot, as long as you have the right safeties in the system you should be fine so long as you don't burn it every time you drive. I'd say you'll knock 15% of the life outta your motor as a guess.

When injecting nitrous you must remember that a specified amount of fuel must be added at the same time as well. In order to accomplish this you must:

    A) Use a wet system which adds both N2O and fuel at the same time.

    B) Use some style of a rising rate fuel pressure regulator with a port for the N2O to be attached to, to be able to increase the fuel pressure under use.

    C) Have some form of programming available to be able to add fuel at that given load vs rpm.

Nitrous is nothing more than a means of adding cylinder pressure (which makes the power) by being introduced into the cylinder in a gaseous state. Increasing cylinder pressures you increase the static compression ratio by a percentage which means more horsepower. Nitrous is very safe when used correctly. Get it wrong it becomes catastrophic.

There are lots of writeups about nitrous, and I've only heard of a few cases where something real bad happened. But with a plastic intake manifold, one sneeze can have your Hemi inhaling shards of plastic debris and that's a bit hard on the inside bits I'd expect.

I'd love to have 100 more horses for less than 10 bucks each, but for me anyway, the risks outweigh the benefits. I'm saving for an all-motor solution.

Lots of members are using nitrous on the 5.7 motors. I installed my ZEX kit last fall and only use it on the track. I have been through about 3 full bottles thus far using the 75 shot. Shaved about 7-8 tenths of a second on the 1/4 mile. Take your time on the install (lots of good info on here). If you monitor your sparkplugs and don't go nuts spraying constantly you will be fine.

Only way I can see a "plastic" intake exploding would be if your firing on an intake valve i.e. a backfire. Haven't seen a backfire on a DIS system for sometime. Would take a component failure or some wacked timing table to cause that. Not to mention I run superchargers on vehicles with plastic intakes with intake pressures of up to 1bar of boost e.g. 14.7:1 psi of boost. Haven't split yet. Point being plastic intakes are stronger than you give them credit for.
