FINALLY I am fixing my Dual Throttle Bodied Intake...with a cutout????

Some of you "old timers" on this board will remember the utter failure for street-ability that was the Heat Performance Dual Throttle Bodied Intake:

Shown here installed with my shaker hood taken off:

Only 2 were ever fabbed up and were not very good on the streets...idling at a stop light was a pain and the computer could not understand all the extra air and would shut put the car into limp mode after 25 minutes on the highway with was a PITA!!!!

So I plugged it and only used it at the track, I kept a tube installed and would plug in the tube and filter at the track but all the plugging and unplugging and reaching around that hot motor got tiresome so I just left it plugged.

Well after talking to some smarter people than I am we as a group figured out that if I could cut off the airflow electronically then it would POSSIBLY be a working part...but how to do it? Tim from Creative Turbos gave me the idea of using an exhaust cutout and so I called Dave at DMH Cutouts and got an order placed for a 3.5" singe exhaust cutout..

I ordered a 3" mandrel bent pipe I will have cut to match my cheap rear intake tube I had made and then use two 3" - 3.5" header collectors to mate the tube to the exhaust cutout....with it being a 3.5" cutout when open it will allow 3" of airflow:

Should be installed later today or tomorrow morning, I will post some more pics and let you know how it works out.

Just wanted to say thanks to 392Stu, Beast2, Hogward, Tim at CIS, and Dave at DMH for the help in getting this together.

Just to explain a little better the U Shaped Mandrel bent pipe will be cut at the elbow to make a small J shaped pipe to match the cheap pipe I was using but could not weld to.

Very creative. Good job taking crappy execution of an idea and making it work better. I hope it works out OK.

I SHOULD be going to Dallas this weekend for out Dyno Day and will try to dyno with the rear intake closed then open to log the difference...the cool thing is it pulls air from the cowl passenger side where the cabin air fliter was and when the rear TB opens you can hear the air coming into the TB down the tube....sound MEAN!@@!

    Very interesting Nathan!

Question: what does everyone think about how well the cutout will seal? Won't even a tiny bit of leakage cause the computer to do strange things? I know you're ready for a tune, but I wonder if even the smallest amount of leakage in part throttle situations might make that job very difficult?

If it seals tight he'll be ok.Remember there is a second TB blade ahead of it as well.

Right, gotcha. But (and maybe I missed this) that second blade will be actuating all the time now, right? Or are you going to still leave it unplugged all the time except at the track Nathan?

Doesn't matter bud, it does not close all the way. And yes CV, the slightest leak will still make Hal crazy. Even as much as profiling the throttle blade just tad will get yu slapped.

Yeah it can Nate; if I understand your current setup, you've got a plug sealing off all possibility of any air being sucked in thru that 2nd TB. So even if that 2nd TB is leaking (as pointed out by Cam is a definitive 'yes') there was no where for it to get any air thanks to the plug.

Now, if I understand correctly, the plug is being replaced with a cutout. If that cutout leaks, you've now just given that 2nd TB a source of air... and hence our concern.

    Make sense?

Looks like an interesting idea... it should help some,

And, if its "almost" a seal, as long as that is consistent, HAL will learn it and work it out over time.

Why not just get the thing CMR tuned with both TB's on there? There has to be some controls for the DBW in the CMR software, eh?
